CROP SCARE LIFTS | WHEAT AT CHICAGO Prices Soar 43/ Cents to Within V4 of Limit for One Session. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, June 19.—Wheat prices today zoared 4% cents a bushel, within V4 of the limit permitted in one session, in a bull market inspired by sensational reports of crop losses in drought re-, gions. September wheat reached 93's cents a bushel just before the market closed | and other deliveries here as well as in other major North American markets rose sharply in sympathy. Wheat, corn, oats and rye futures sold at the highest prices of the season on the Chicago Board of Trade. Both in Minneepolis and Kansas City the actual maximum limit was reached, & rise of 5 cents a bushel. Tumultuous buying was increased in the late dealings owing to anxiety &s to domestic Winter wheat as well as Spring being damaged by dry hot winds. Wheat in Chicago closed flurried 3%a4), cents above yesterday's fin- ish, July 913ga917%, September 92%a , corn 2'3a3 up, September 63338 633, oats 1'3al’; advanced and pro- visions showing 12 to 20 gain. ‘WHEAT— Onen High. Low. Cllgt 1057 107 10.70 10.05 5 13.12 Receipt of reliable reports that wheat would be a total failure in some sections of the Northwestern Spring crop area unless rain came at once loosed a wave of speculative buy- ing that whirled values upward to well above 90 cents a bushel for July and September deliveries. Light rains were reported in parts of the Cana- vailed generally on this side of the border. A Chicago crop expert touring the Dakotas reported drought had Jam- aged wheat throughout Northern South Dakota. Specific reports from some counties in the Dakotas asserted all small grains were past redemp- tion, Some traders said serious losses of Spring wheat for the third consecu- tive year might prevent the United States from returning to a wheat export. Ey the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, June 19.—The July cotton market position sold well above the 12-cent level today, the first time any future delivery has sold at that figure since November, 1935. The near-month strength brought in some additional buying of new- crop deliveries, with October selling up | to 11.47, or 12 points net higher. Prices were within a few points o{} the best in late trading, showing net | advances of about 4 to 19 points. The strength in the market was| believed to reflect a scarcity of spot cotton to fill the rapidly expanding demand prompted by the increased | activity in the textile markets. | | In PFebruary it was announced that the pool at that time held 820,500 bales of futures contracts and with the liquidation of July deliveries the pool holdings have been reduced to | 124,300 October contracts. By the Associated Press. BOSTON, June 19.—The Commercial | Bulletin will say tomorrow: “While the market for wool keeps firm, there is a lessening of activity, especially in the West, where the pace has been rather swift. Prices paid in the West have been maintained on a firm basis. although without material change from last week. “The manufacturing position is not | week ago. New business is naturally slower and spinners and combers find it impessible to secure replacement | values for their yarns and tops. Foreign markets are quiet and a bit easier. Mohair is quieter, but very firm at last week's level.” INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK. June 19 (P —New York Security Dealers’ Association (Noon Quotations.) Ry the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, June 19.—Trade movements bore more heavily to the brisk side this week as preparations | proceeded for broadening activities | during the Summer months, the week= ly review of Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., said today. Retail business widened the rate of gains over 1935, with most seasonal lines expanding. Better shopping weather gave consumer buying its chief list, the survey found. In wholesale lines Fall buying proge ressed well, with difficulties reported in securing immediate delivery on some items, although the total turn- over in this division held close to the levels of the preceding week. ' At retail, purchases in-leading cities were said to be topping 1935 figures by 5 to 8 per cent, causing estimators to place the probable totals for the entire country at some 10 to 15 per cent to the good. The middle and Northwestern ree gions were credited with improvement over last year of 15 to 21 per cent, the Southwest with 12 td 14 per cent and the West Coast with a rise of 10 to 12 per cent. Among wholesalers, advantages over last year ranged from 12 to 18 per cent, it was reported, with movement of goods following consumer demand closely. Fall coats, fur garments, shoes and underwear were among rapid movers at wholesale, while store customers took to sporting goods, luggage, | graduation and wedding apparel and gifts. Bonus money spending was little | felt, and most merchants were said |to be counting on the coming week for first major indications of the ex< tent of the expenditures by veterans, FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK.
