F A woman is nominated for Presi- dent on the Democratic ticket| about 30 Summers hence, she probably will be Edna Mae Nance, pretty red-headed cousin of Vice | President John Nance Garner. | The young lady from Texas is su- | pervisor of the stenographic pool of the Agricultural Adjustment Adminis- tration in the daytime. She sttends law school in the eve- nings and will be gracuated next June ‘und?rsunds German from National University. She is a member of the | organization both in Washington and in Texas. Plays a Little Golf. Besides these activities, Miss Nance manages to get in a little golf and does her own cooking in the apart-| ment she shares with another girl. | Miss Nance is one of those astound- | ing members of the younger genera-| tion who makes one wonder uneasily what one does with the 16 hours a day one is not working. When interviewed | today at the Young Democrats’ head- | quarters in the Colorado Building, she | appeared cool and unruffled, charming with her auburn hair, fair skin and hazel eyes. The city is the terminal of the inter- national bridge, the Mexican town on the other side of the Rio Grande be- ing Rey Nosa. “We cross the border for bull fights or cock fights when we get bored with the movies,” Miss Nance says. In McAllen Mexicans stroll about the streets, playing guitars and accordions on Summer evenings. The Nances live on the edge of town. Mrs. Nance's grapefruit ranch being on a part of their land. They keep horses and Edna Mae has been riding trails along the Rio Grande Valley since childhood. “Would you like to go into politics?” Miss Nance was asked. Wants to be Judge. “I believe it would be interesting,” she replied, “but at the moment I aspire to being a Juvenile court judge some day, that being a profession in which women members of the bar are welcomed. The closest I've gotten to the courts so far was being a court reporter in the county circuit courts at home for a time.” Although Miss Nance almost ended her active life and promising career when she overturned in a canoe on the Potomac River last Summer, and was dragged from the water un- conscious, the Nance-Garner-Texas tradition doubtless will bring her to the achievement of any ambition she elects. But if the Nation is to have a woman chief executive and com- mander in chief of its armed forces eventually, as is frequently predicted these days, by all means let that woman be as tireless as Miss Nance. Kirk Maddrix, Somerset County Young Republican leader, said the appointment of Mrs. Harry T. Phoebus to & State job “just about breaks the camel's back” of county Republicanism. By the Assoctated Press. LYNCHBURG, Va., June 19.—A severe thunderstorm used its most effective weapon — cyclonic winds, lightning, driving rain and hail—to give Lynchburg one of its worst beat- ings in many years late yesterday. Inestimable damage was done to parks, where valuable trees were up- rooted; thousands of dollars of de- struction was brought to communica- tion and power lines, and police worked overtime to keep pedestrians off live wires wrenched from poles by falling debris. The storm converted day into night for a short while. During its height at 4:30 p.m. visikility was not as good as it is at dusk. Lights were turned on in buildings, on the streets and automobiles crept over wind and rain lashed streets with headlights ablaze. Temperature Records.
