N.B.C. WILL CARRY' MARINE PROGRAM Sea Soldiers to Celebrate 160th Anniversary With | Broadcast. HE 160th anniversary celebra- tion of the United States| Marines, who were making American history before the Declaration of Independence was signed, will be broadcast over an N. B. C. network Sunday. The program will come from the Marine barracks in Washington, and will include music by the Marine Band and a talk by Maj. Gen. John H. Russell, commandant of the Marine Corps. The Marines came into being after ‘Ticonderoga and Crown Point, on| Lake' Champlain, had been cumurem May 10, 1775. Colonial soldiers under | Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen took over a number of batteaux and sailed for St. John's, at the north end of the lake. to capture the armed sloop, | Enterprise, that was lying there. | Arnold and his men were the first to arrive, and they sloop when Allen got there. Shortly afterward the Contmenlnl‘ Congress passed a resolution author- izing two battalions of Marines, al- though by this time they had been | j recruited in several State navies. After | they were organized they sailed to the Bahamas and captured two forts and & large supply of war materials. ‘They were soon on all armed Ameri- can vessels, and fought with the Army | in various battles. They also fought Indians, and in the war with Tripoli in 1803 marched 600 miles into the desert from Alexandria, Egypt. to capture the Tripolitan stronghold or‘ Derne—the first time the American flag was raised over a fortress in the ©Old World, * % ¥ % HEN the National Corn-Husking | Contest gets under way on the Leslie Mitchell farm near Newtown, | Ind., Friday, Hal Totten, veteran | Eports announcer, and Eyerett Mitchell, N. NEW YNRK, November 5—The United States Circuit Court of Ap- | peals held yesterday J. Edward Jones, oil royalties dealer, must answer a sub- boena of the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington to testify regarding securities he listed for sale. Jones had appealed from the sub- poena and a lower court’s refusal to | et it aside, on the ground he had at- tempted to withdraw ,a registration statement and had not actually sold any of the securities in question. He had contended there remained ho ground for any examination by the 8. E. C. The court held no final order had been entered by the commission and refused to review the commission ac- tion in denying Jones the privileg® of withdrawing the registration state- ment. ' Judge Martin T. Manton, presiding, #et forth the commission had the pow- er to issue interlocutory rulings and refused Jones' appeal on the ground it ‘was premature until a final ruling had been handed down. /AUXILIARY WILL DINE "Jewish Women to Hold Fourth Donors’ Luncheon. ‘The Washington Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Jewish Consumptive Relief So- ciety of Denver, Colo., will hold its fourth annual donors’ luncheon Wed- nesday at 12:30 p.m. in the Willard Hotel for the benefit of the non-sec- retarian sanitarium at Denver, which s helps support. HARTFORD, Conn., November 5.— A plan to revive the textile industry through a direct Federal subsidy of 6 cents a pound on cotton sold by the Government to textile mills is being sponsored by Senator Augustine Lon- ergan, Democrat, of Connecticut. ‘The plan, revealed yesterday, calls for the Government to sell cotton to man- ufacturers for 7 cents a pound. Sen- ator Lonergan said President Roose- velt is “interested” in the plan and that “serious consideration” is being given fit. “Many Connecticut and New Eng- land textile mills now are either hav- ing a tough time of it or are closed,” the Senator said. “They would be greatly aided, and they could put a great many persons to work, if they could purchase their cotton on a subsidy from the United States Government. “Five million or so bales of cotton are now owned by the Federal Gov- ernment through loans of 12 cents a pound to growers.
