INCREASEFAVORD N POLGE FORGE Dupont Circle Citizens In- dorse Brown’s Request for More Officers. An increase of personnel in the police department large enough to keep pace with the increasing popu- lation of the city was urged by Maj. Frnest W. Brown, superintendent of police, in an address before the Du- pont Circle Citizens’ Association at its meeting yesterday in the May- flower Hotel. Maj. Brown, in reviewing police sta- tistics, said the total number of ar- rests in the District of Columbia dur- ing the last three years had increased by 30,383. In urging the association to in- dorse his demands for the increase 4n personnel, he said the total num- ber of registered automobiles in the District is 200,535, as compared with rests has increased to over 30,000. 'Three hundred and forty-nine of these were arrests of persons charged with driving in an intoxicated condi- tion, an increase of 170 over the 1933 total of 179. In speaking on he traffic situa- tion, Maj. Brown declared he favors establishment of a pedestrian control system on corners where right and | left hand turns are permitted. The activities of the Police Boys® Clubs throughout the city were out- lined by Maj. Brown, who declared the value of the boys' club has been shown by the large decrease in de- linquencies. The next club, he an- nounced, will be one for the colored boys in the number 2 police precinct. Maj. Brown also expressed the hope that all-night parking in the District will be abolished at some time in the tuture. The group indorsed Maj. Brown's request for the increase of police personnel in & resolution by Frank C. Baldwin. Copies will be sent to the District Budget Bureau and House and Senate Committees. o Young Fishers. HUNT| SKELETON ASSEMBLED Construction Officer Says Valley Colony to Be Worth Weight in Gold. By the Associated Press. ANCHORAGE, Alasks, November 5.—The Federal Government's Mata- nuska Valley colonization project eventually will be worth “its weight in gold,” Lieut. Col. Leroy P. Hunt, United States Marine Corps, project construction officer, said yesterday. His departure for Washington, D. C., marked the close of the construc- tion period “for the colony. “The project is bound to be a suc- cess,” he said. “Three thousand fami- lies have applied for permission to join the colony. “The yelling in the States by col- onists who quit and who say the proj- ect is folly is nothing more than an attempt to justify their returning.” Futile Claim. That he has used 20 gallons of ink and pushed his pen 6,000 miles across white paper in his official duties, is the claim of a magistrate of Johannesburg, South Africa. % Astrapotherium Magnum Lived in South America 12,000,000 Years Ago.
