HUGHES. | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 7.—As the | flow of gold to this country rises in | | volume, a situation is created unpre- | | cedented in the history of the world The United States already had, before the present influx began, the largest store of gold any country ever | had at any time. Now, with the possibility of a general European war | | still more | looming, more gold and . I gold is coming as fast as ships can | be provided to carry it. It raises the fantastic question as | to what would happen if we were to accumulate all the gold there is. What | would be the value of gold in that| case? How could the rest of the | world continue to regard it as a mone- tary base? Of course, that position |is still a long way off and it is im- but it is not impossible. Total About $9,400,000,000. As it stands, this country has about | $9.400.000.000 of gold in the present | devalued dollar. The 10.000,000,000- mark is in sight and something like 11,000,000,000 would give us half the world's supply of gold. The golden stream first turned thjs way when the dollar was stabi- |lized in January, 1934, and, with ‘01.1}’ minor interruptions, has been running ever since. First, it was the return of Ameri- can capital taken abroad during the later stages of the depression. Second, it was a result of the fact, now slowly betommg evident, that in | price of gold at $35 an ounce dollar was greatly undervalued. By this is meant that, with international credit relations and international trade what they are and with the gold value of other currencies what it 1s, 1t ought not to take $35 buy an ounce of gold. Per! ought to take more than $20.67, | certainly not as much as $35 proof of that is the fact present price draws gold to the Un States as a magnet picks up the ste filings Internal Effects Feared. No one need waste I the worries of the hoarder of There are plenty of other more deserving. The really a is the econon ser effect of this mountain of gold. We have more gold than we need, more than we want and more than we can make any wise use of. The re- is to add to the excess re- of the banks and threaten a runaway rise prices.
