C. Applegate Linked With Wife’s Demise. By the Associated Press. MINEOLA, N. Y., October 7.—Po- | lice held Everett C. Applegate today jon a charge of assaulting a 15-year- old girl as they continued an inves- tigation into the death of Applegate's wife, Ada. Mrs. Applegate died September 27. An autopsy and chemical examination later disclosed nine grains of poison which Dr. Alexander Gettler, toxicolo- gist, said was sufficient to cause death. District Attorney Martin W. Little- ton ordered Applegate brought in for questioning. During that examina- tion, the district attorney said, the information on which the assault charge is based was disclosed. Littleton also questioned Mr. and Mrs, John Creighton, who lived with the Applegates, and their daughter, Ruth Creighton, but later allowed them to return home. The district attorney declared Mr. | in 1923 of a charge of poisoning Mrs. fCrelghlon's brother, and the woman | previously had been acquitted in 1920 of poisoning her mother-in-law at Newark. Inspector Harold R. King of the Nassau police said no information re- garding Mrs. Applegate’s death had been disclosed to show the poison was | not self-administered. | Applegate is employed as an investi- gator for the Veterans’ Bureau.
