By the Associated Press NEW ORLEANS, September 20.— James E. Van Zandt of Altoona, Pa., will head the Veterans of Forei of the United States as th mander in chief for his third consecu- tive term. Bernard W. Kearney of Gloversville, N. Y., will succeed himself as senior vice commander. Both were nominated in the annual convention here today without oppo- sition for formal election late today. Prior to the secret conferences last night a spirited contest was antici- pated between Van Zandt and Bernard W. Kearney of Gloversville, N. Y. It was reliably reported at the open- ing of the final session of the 36th annual encampment today, that the Kearney supporters had agreed to the re-election of Van Za in return for the present comman n chief's sup- port of the New Yorker for senior vice commander, a post he now holds.
