HERE are flowers that bloom at night, for the special benefit, it would seem, of an interest- ing group of fliers—the moths. These creatures are often called butterflies, by those who do not know the distinction betweecn the two. ‘There is & vast difference between the slender-bodied butterfly, lover of bright sunshine, and the buxom, fur- clad moth of the shadows. Some of them do have this in com- mon—a long, hollow, tube-like tongue. When they fly, it is coiled tightly under the chia. When visiting deep- throated blossoms, it is zipped out and thrust into the slender bowl of nectar. Many, seeing the insect poised be- fore the flower, think it is apparently standing in mid-air, looking iato the flower's cup. Far from it. The wings vibrate too fast for the eye to follow. ‘The tongue, too slender for you to see, is inside the flower—the insect is sipping its drink through an indi- vidual straw. Another ideatification mark is pro- vided by the feathery antennae, with which a moth is equipped. Also, the position of the wings determines a good deal. A moth’s wings are either folded ‘against the body or spread, whereas a butterfly holds its wings above the back, when resting. The sphinx or hawk moths are next #n rank to the giant silk-worm moths, both in size and beauty. Theirs is & large family, with over a hundred members in the United States. They are aristocratic in appearance and stately in their bearings. They have Tersa Sphinx (Xylophanes tersa). Children closely-fitted scales, and are in rich colors of olive, brown, tan, ocher, yellow and black in various combina- tions, as well as gray, rose, and shades of yellow or rose on the abdomen. The butterflies are more gally be- decked. The body is always stout and hairy and in keeping with the wings. ‘The long, narrow wings are capable of long flights. The moth mother lays her eggs on or close to the food her offspring | ’mu.st have. The caterpillar is long | and cylindrical, with green and yel- low oblique stripes, finished off with | a perky horn at the tip of its body. | When disturbed, it rears up and | takes the famous sphinx attitude, which it is capable of holding for an hour or more if it is so inclined. | The tersa is an American. She is quite easily recognized, having a wide | range, though not venturing farther | north than Southern Canada, south- | | west from there to Texas and Mexico, | |and as far South as Northern | Argentina. (Copyright. 19 5 How It Started BY JEAN NEWT “Be It Ever So Humble.” IT IS a little over 100 years since “Home Sweet Home” in which appears this line known throughout the English-speaking world, first played upon the heart strings of ‘a delighted London audience as the hit eong of the opera “Clari, the Maid of Milan.” The author, John Howard Payne, composed the stanzas to the tune of an old Sicilian melody which he had picked up during his peregrinations in Italy. o Payne, a talented American, was born in 1792. At 13, he was writing for the press. At 16, he was on the stage. Finding America insufficiently appreciative of his offerings, he went abroad to travel, to study and to make a living. It was during this period that he wrote the song which made him immortal. John Howard Payne died as consul of Tunis in 1852 at the age of 60. Nothing he ever did could evoke any: where near the enthusiastic world- wide popularity of “Home Sweet Home,” which was translated into all languages, and bids fair to endure as & classic for posterity. If handkerchiefs are to be washed, soak in salty water for about 15 min- utes before the actual laundering is to be done. This will be quite as helpful as soaking overnight. The Old Gardener Says: In some sections of the country lawns have suffered very badly this Summer because of the drought. Such lawns will need extra attention when Autumn rains revive them. They should be given a good dressing of fertil- izer, preferably a special lawn fertilizer such as the seed stores sell, or at least a well-balanced garden fertilizer. Oftentimes much can be accomplished by spreading & thin layer of com- mercial compost or screened gar- den soil over the lawn, working it into the grass with a rubber or bamboo rake. The application of lime is also helpful in sections where acid soils are found. Autumn is an excellent time for adding lime, because it will be washed into the soil by the Fall rains. If the drought persists well into the Fall, artificial water- ing will be most important.
