Bales in Washington's leading de- partment stores in July soared 26.9 per cent above the record for July a| year ago, according to the monthly | report made today by the Federal Re- gerve Bank of Richmond. For the first six months of this year | retail sales in the Capital were 13.7 per cent ahead of the agaregate dollar | volume in the like period last vear,| the best report from any city in theI 168 . fifth reserve district. | The gain reported by 56 depar!monti stores in the fifth district in July was| 16 per cent, compared with 14 per| cent for 523 stores in the whole United States, while the fifth district gain for | the seven months stood at 6 per cent against the lower figure of 3 per cent for the entire country. Banks Loaning on Automobiles. Quite & number of Washington bagks are handling a good deal of automobile paper in an effort to in- crease their loans. So many banks in other sections of the country have been loaning money on the purchase of automobiles that they have come Yo be called their “worst competitors™ by the old line automobile finance companies.
