NAMI G HAL STORNED BY OB Commission Pledges Wel- fare Aid as 1,500 Complain Relief Inadequate. By the Associated Press. MIAMI, Fla., August 1.—More than 1,500 persons—many crying they were starving—marched on Miami's City Hall yesterday and gained their ob- jective—the city commission’s pledge to release funds immediately to relieve the welfare crisis. The throng, jamming the commis- sion chamber, heard speakers bitterly complain of Miami’s paradoxical sit- uation, business barometers zooming to new record heights while thousands hunger. “T'll show him plenty of bread lines fn Miami,” shouted John Gavelock, spokesman for the jobless, after he charged the Chamber of Commerce secretary had broadcast that “Miami has no bread lines.” ‘The march, planned, at a mass meeting of the jobless last Monday | night, was orderly. Participants in- | cluded mothers carrying infants and | aged men who hobbled into the cham- | ber leaning on canes. Commissioner Threatened. Police were needed only once, as the | audience surged against the railing | that separates the public from the | commission table when Commissioner E. G. Sewell shouted: “Don’t you scalawags start anything | here.” ‘The crowd roared back. “Sit down and shut up.” But there were cheers for Mayor A. D. H. Fossey when he said the commission had “every desire to re- lieve the plight of the unemployed.” “We are starving,” cried one wom- an. “We want food.” There was a reference to the gar- bage collection tax the commission | considered at budget-making meet- | ings last week. Says She Eats Garbage. “I have been starving for five years,” cried one woman. “You talk of a garbage tax. In my home we have no garbage. My husband and I eat the garbage of our neighbors‘ to keep alive.” | Gavelock conceded the city was “in | & bad way” financially. “And we know it is not the fault of the commissioners that money is 1s not available to care for this situa- tion. “But this is a gnv' situation and something real must be ‘done to al- leviate it. It is fast getting worse and we can no longer look to the Federal Government for even the lit- tle help they gave us in the past.” The commission decided to name an advisory committee of business and | civic leaders to confer with the com- | thissioners in an effort to find a solu- | tion to the welfare problem.
