Some supporters of the Wilcox air base bill are known to be concerned lest it bé killed by & presidential veto. The bill, which authorizes expend- fture of nearly $120,000,000 for con- struction of six major air bases for the Army, passed the Senate last week and went to the White House. Since thea, there has been no indi- cation of presidential action on ft. The fact he did not sign it quickly has given rise to a feeling in some quarters that he may not approve of it. President Non-Committal. Sponsors of the six-zone air defense plan provided in the bill acknowledge the President was non-committal when asked several weeks ago if he would approve it. Having seen the bill travel as far | #s the President's desk, however, | Representative Wilcox, Democrat, of Florida, its author, is making efforts to have it enacted. | He had appointments today with Becretary of War Dern and with Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Army chief of staff. He said he would go to the White House afterward in hopes of | discussing his measure with~ the President. | If the bill is signed, Secretary Derni is expected to appoint a commission | of five high ranking Air Corps officers | who will inspect cities throughout | the United States in a quest for sites for the bases. No New Appropriation. Among those under consideration are Portland, Oreg.; Seattle, Fair-| banks, Alaska; Denver, Salt Lake City, | Albuquerque, N. Mex.; Miami, Boston, | Portland, Me., and. Concord, N. H. MANCHESTER, Conn., August 1.— When Harold Irish, 21-year-old me- chanic, quit his job and went to war in March, 1918, he seft his tool kit at his home here, Irish, who enlisted in the Navy, never returned. He iost his life when the convoy ship Tampa was sunk off the southwest coast of Eagland. His mother, Mrs. Macy F. Irish, kept her son's kit as a remembrance but left it unopened until recently, when she was huntinz for a screw- driver which she needed to hang & curtain rod. The first thing she saw on opening the kit was a slip of paper which proved to be a pay order for $27 issued to her son for the week ending March 12, 1918, by a Hartford turbine company where he had been em- ployed. Mrs. Irish presented the order to| the company and its president said it will be honored. —— Dr. Crane Transferred Here. ALBANY, Ga., August 1 (#.—Dr, H. L.
