DAILY SHORT STORY. ANOTHER COLOR BY ANITA 'HE Eastern sky was suffused with carly day- light; long stream- ers of sunlight flung themselves upward from the fringe of trees bor- dering the exposi- tion grounds. In the uncertain light Jeff Henderson leaned upon the rail of the oval race track looking at its far side through the pair of binoculars which hung from his neck on a leather strap. Every now and then he glanced at the stop watch in his hand Presently around the far turn @& horse came streak- ing swiftly toward him, head held high and legs beating the ground with mechanical rhythm. As it stormed past Jeff grunted with satisfaction. “How did she behave, Moe?” he called as the horse came trotting back. “Like a million, boss! I'd say that she's got the edge on anything in this county except maybe Mr. Nich- ols’ black filly, Niteshade!” The mention of Nichols’ name brought & momentary frown to Jefl's countenance. Nichols was & new- comer to the blue grass; his wealth had been able to purchase for him | “That Would JARDINE. Jeff remembered, rather ruefully. Tannin had been kept uncer blan- kets before the race and Jeff was one of the many who had not bet on him. Now, at the height of his ca- reer, Tannin was cleaning up Derby purses all over the country. “Nightshade will be in all right,” Nichols said in parting. “And I'm afraid Meadow hasn't & chance.” Jeff grinned. Fair day at the exposition grounds! The thousands of persons thronging | o the track turned to watch the fea- ture event of the day — the 2-year-old race. Down at the rail stood Jeff and Mary. Clutching his arm, she watched down the stretch of fresh tanbark to the left as he excitedly called to her the numbers of the horses coming around the turn into the stretch. “Ten, that's Niteshade, and 14, Meadow, and they're neck and neck! Come on, Meadow! You've got to win!” Mary felt him quivering with anxiety and expectation as she tight- ened her grasp on his arm. She felt Be an Idea.” |an unexpected wave of tenderness a place in the community, but not| e, pim ™~ He had been so wrought in the hearts of the land owners, most of whom regarded him as an interloper. “Hello, Miss Mary!” Jeff turned at Moe's greeting and smilingly returned Mary Hunter’s wave as she walked toward them from the deserted grandstand. Mary was his flancee—had been for almost & year. Bad business and no profit from the stock farm had prompted Jeff to hesitate at marriage until he had at least a stake. “Well, early birds” she regretted, “it seems as though I am too late to watch Meadow work out!” “I've decided to give her a chance at the $5,000 purse at the county fair next week, Mary.” Jeff's voice was jubilant. “She just did 9 furlongs in 2:08. Not bad for a 2-year-old, eho” Mary's face mirrored his enthusi- asm. *“But,” she objected, “what about the $250 entry fee?” “We'll manage,” Jeffl returned. “Meadow can beat any 2-year-old around these parts, and we can use five grand.” Mary was still reluctant. “Can she beat Niteshade?” she asked. Jeff sobered momentarily. “It'll be a close race,” he admitted. But Jefl's spirits rose to new heights after he encountered Nichols that afternoon. His inquiry about Nite- shade's condition brought a scowl to Nichols’ face. “Seems to have sprained a fore- foot this morning,” Nichols said. “She oughta be all right with a few days’ rest. These young horses, you know— anything excites them.” “Yeah,” Jefl admitted, trying to express concern over his rival's ill- fortune. Nichols was a notoriously poor loser and Jeff almost felt sorry for him. “Too bad you can’t send Tannin in to pinch hit for Niteshade,” he grinned. Nichols smiled in spite of himself. “That would be an idea!” His en- thusiasm began to mount. “Say, Henderson, there is a horse! Nite- shade will never approach him for speed. He won the 2-year-old race at the fair last year, you remember.” HELP—MEN. AUTO MECHANIC for general auto re- pairs. body and (endtr work: must have good reference. She knew how he felt—and how much the race meant to him—to them. Another moment and the field was almost to the finish line. Jefl's knuckles were white with clutch- ing the rail before him. He sagged with an inarticulate cry as the string of horses thundered across the finish line with Nichols' big black almost a full length ahead of Meadow! “We're beaten, Mary!” His cry was almost a moan. “For good, I guess. . . . I sold everything but the buildings to get the entry fee and bet on Meadow! I was s fool!” “It's a shame, Jeff!” Mary's voice held a trace of tears. Jeff took her by the arm. “At least we can congratulate Nichols. Come on, Mary, there he is with Niteshade before the judges’ stand!™ They made their way through the milling crowd, hardly heeding the expressions of sympathy from friends as they went. Through the paddock gate they stepped upon the track and over to where Nichols stood watching the judge place a huge horseshoe of flowers about the neck of the black filly. “My congratulations, Nichols,” Jeff said, extending his hand. “Thanks,” Nichols replied. sorry it was you I had to beat!” Jeft was about to turn away with Mary on his arm when he heard the judge exclaim in surprise. Turn- ing, he saw him staring at his white-gloved hand, across the palm of which was & broad streak of black. Taking his handkerchief from his pocket, the judge rubbed it along the sweating neck of Niteshade and “rm it came away black, while where he ‘om had rubbed on the horse’s hide there gleamed through the sheen of a light- brown coat!” “Congratulations is right,” Mary cried, “but to Tannin, not Nite- shade (Copyright. 1935.)
