J, July 2—Fire swept through the Palisades Amuse- ment Park late yesterday at the height of a day’s outing for 1,500 New York children. The flames destroyed most of the midway, but all of the children, police said, were led to safety. Jack Rosenthal, manager of the park, leased it two weeks ago from Nicholas Schenck, theater and film magnate, who had bought it at auction in May out of sentiment’s sake—it was where Schenck began dis climb in the entertainment world. The fire, origin undetermined, broke out in the old mill in lovers’ lane, & water ride built in a squat structure high up on the Palisades opposite New York. The flames licked up the sides of the dry timbers and their covering and moved by & brisk river wind from the Hudson raged down the midway. Men, women and children fled for their lives. ‘The heat started bullets popping in & shooting gallery and its proprietor ‘was wounded in'the wrist.
