CONGRESSIONAL COUNTRY CLUB, Md., June 27.—Defending champion Charlie Yates of Georgia Tech finished the first 18 holes of his quarter-final match in the intercol- legiate golf championship today 2 up on Jack Malloy of Princeton. One down at the"turn with a 40 against 39 for Malloy, Yates turned on the heat over the back nine, going over par once and bagging s birdie on the fifteenth to wind up with an even par 35. He squared the match with a par 4 at the tenth, lost the eleventh, squared agaln at the twelfth and went into the lead with & 20-foot putt, which dropped into the cup for & birdie on the fifteenth. He won the seventeenth with a par 4 when Malloy’s second shot was| trapped. Yates was 75 for the round against 77 for Malloy.
