Some are very much annoyed. “Tweet, tweet, tweet,” one calls. “Is it really time to get up?” dearie; yes, dearie,” another one assures him, and from every di- rection you hear call notes that in- dicate the way the sleeper felt. Then away they go, and some luckless worm, poking his head from his doorway for a bit of fresh air, loses it. Chippy, unlike his sparrow cousins, often builds a home in the top of a tall tree. Usually, the vines or shrubs | about a dwelling are chosen, and from 1 to 25 feet above the ground, you will find one of the most perfectly | made bassinets you will want for your | collection. There are two broods a year, and Mother Chippy usually has time to construct a fresh one for the | second brood. Well-chosen rootlets and grass are | used for the exterior walls. The weav- ing is expertly done. The inner walls and mattress are made of horsehair or any hair the eagle-eyed builder caught sight of when building ac- tivities were upon her. Into the deep bassinet are laid three to five light blue eggs, with splashes and marks of purplish brown, tinged with green, on them. Men’s Fashions For Summer Comfort © 1935, Bequire Magazioe TIM! was when no one would con- sider the idea of wearing & double- breasted suit during the Summer time. But now there has been a complete revival of this suit and the double- breasted jacket in appropriate Sum- as well. . One very stanch argument for the wearing of a double-breasted jacket is that this jacket obviates the neces- | sity of a waistcoat and appears just 4s smart without it—while it is, of course, possible to wear single-breasted jackets without waistcoats, the effect |is not so pleasing. With double- breasted jackets favored by fashion more than ever before, there is every indication that this Summer will find many men appreciating the comfort inherent in this model. Eight-Card Problem. OVIII. half a century ago, Henry Jones of London, possibly the greatest whist player who ever lived, was writing on the play of the hand under the pseudonym of Cavendish. When I was a boy I used to spend hours on end puszling out his old whist problems. It always amazed me, and it amazes me still, that any one can devise a simple layout of 32 eards that baffiles the would-be solver for hours on end. But after tackling a fresh problem, grimly determined to solve it in 60 seconds flat, I would still be scratching my head at the end of 60 Minutes. The point has been taken by sub- sequent authorities that problems are merely mental pastimes; that they are no help whatsoever in everyday bridge. I disagree. After I had got the hang of the thing and had short- ened my time limit to 10 minutes maximum, I found that I could exe- cute the simpler squeezes and coups that came up during the course of | rubber bridge play with much more | accuracy and finesse. It may be that | your mind does not run in those same channels; that problems to you are but the idle amusements of those who can- not stand the rigors of the bridge table. I have tentatively planned to give a five or eight card problem once | every week. They were Cavendish’s favorites, and they are mine as well. | But if I find that they meet with pub- lic disapproval, I will reluctantly dis- continue them. ‘Today’s is very simple. You should | solve it in seven to twelve minutes. If you strike s snag, however, and the | eight spots begin to dance before your | eyes, write to me, care of this news- | paper, and I will come to your rescue | with the solution, via a postcard that I have already prepared. Sharpen your pencils or bring out the frayed deck of cards that is in the right-hand drawer of the secretary |and get to work. I wish you luck. | | Diamonds are trumps, South has the lead.
