STORE SALES MAINTAIN LEAD Capital Volume in May Is Largest of Fifth Re- serve District. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Leading every other city In the fifth Federal Reserve district, eight big ‘Washington department stores regis- tered an advance in retail sales of 8.3 per cent in May over the like month & year ago, according to the monthly report made by the Reserve Bank of Richmond today. For the first five months of this year retail sales in the Capital were 12.4 per cent ahead of last year, this also being the best rec- ord in the fifth district, with the ex- ception of one city. Department store sales in the whole district in May of this year totaled approximately the same in dollar | amount as sales in May, 1934, but 40 | of the 59 stores reported smaller sales | last month. In cumulative sates for the first five months of this year, the fifth district showed an average in- crease amouhting to 5 per cent. Total sales in 504 stores in the United States in May, 1935, were 1 per cent less than sales in May, 1934, but cumulative sales in the Nation were 2 per cent above total sales in the first five months of last year. Individual percentages for cities in which three of more stores reported for May this year and the five months compare with corresponding periods in 1934 as follows: Jan.-Max. Cities. L Baltimore. The Richmond and Chicago districts reported retail sales in May as ex- actly the same volume as & vear ago, the Federal Reserve Board announced here today. With an 11 per cent gain, San Francisco reported the best show- ing of any of the 12 Reserve areas. The Federal Reserve Board's index of department store sales. which makes allowance for differences in the num- ber of business days. and for usual seasonal movements, including changes in the date of Easter, was 76 in May, on the basis of the 1923-1925 average as 100, compared with 73 in April | and 82 in March. Spencer, jr., vice presi- dent, vice president of the First Na- tional Bank, Boston, was elected presi- dent, and Norman T. Hayes, vice presi- dent of the Philadelphia National Bank, was named vice president for the coming year. E. Park of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank was nomi- nated for president of the institute and Henry Verdelin of Minneapolis | for vice president. Washington Railway & Electric 4s were in very lively demand on the ‘Washington Stock Exchange today. Bix consecutive $1,000 sales were made at 105, followed by two $500 transfers at the same price. It was one o. the best bond sessions in weeks. Washington Gas Light 6s, series B, came out in $1,000 transac- tions at 104, while $500 Washington Gas 5s, 1960, moved at the recently established high, price of 117%%. Stocks were quiet. Washington Rail- way & Electric preferred moved at| 105%2 in two small-lot sales. Amer- jcan Telephone & Té was quoted ex-dividend today. The bid on Capital Trapsit remained at 20, with 2174 asked, same as yesterday. Considerable comment was heard in the financial district today over Chair- announcement that asked in the light of past experience, Chairman Kennedy said.
