NOrth 00/8 “A FRIEND in need is a friend indeed.” Ask Your Neighbor Sponsors of “Spires of Melodies” WISV Every Sundsy at 1:45 P. M. THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MAY 12, 1935—PART ONE. - e s e L e Woodbury Lewery of Washington, whose family was prominent here in the 90's. The duke was the first Spanish Minister to the United States after the Spanish-American War. She died March 8, 1934, at the age of 80 years, in the luxurious Brand- accio palace in Rome, where she had made her home for several years. The duke died in 1928 in San Sebastian, Spain, and his body had been held in a vault there until the two were moved together to Her native land. The duchess had requested in an elaborate 15-page will that they be burled side by side here. As Miss Lowery she was betrothed to the young attache of the Spanish Legation many years before he became Minister and distinguished himself in the diplomatic service. At the time of her marriage she was said to have been the only American woman to marry a Spanish grandee. During his career, the duke served also as Minister to Chile and Mexico and as Ambassador to Ruasia and Italy. His wife, meanwhile, clung to her American citizenship, renewing her passport whenever it expired. In her will she left nearly $1,000,000 to American institutions, including a valuable collection of art which was given to the National Art Gallery in the Smithsonian. 8he has many relatives in Wash- ington, including Maj.
