CAPOL PLAVERS FGH OVER BAL Congressmen and Writers Split on Use of Hard or Soft Type. Hard ball versus soft ball is the issue which is stirring to the depths the Seventy-fourth Congress and the National Press Galleries. One party demands the use of the regulation hard base ball for the game which is to be played on the Marines’ base ball field at Quantico, Va., Sat- urday, May 25. The other party in- sists upon the “soft ball”—an indoor base ball—as more suited to the hands end muscles of both members of Congress and the press galleries. Hard Ball Is Shunned. ‘Whether the “softies” are located in the congressional group or the press gallaries is disputed also. Neither side looks with favor on the designation. But both sides regard with some re- luctance the hard base ball. The base ball game will be one of the main events of the outing which the newspaper men and members of Congress are to stage at Quantico. Members of the National Press Club, of the press galleries at the Capitol, | and of the staffs of the local news-| papers and their guests will board the | steamer City of Wilmirgton ‘at 1| p.m., May 25 for the trip down the river. On arrival the newspaper men | and the members of Congress, led by | the Vice President and Speaker Byrns, will march behind the Navy Band to the Marine base ball field. The congressional team will be captained by Representative Tom McMillan of South Carolina, and Louis E. White | will lead the scribes to battle. Nice Will Take Part. Gov. Nice of Maryland has ac- cepted an invitation to take part in the outing, and it is said the Gov- ernors of three other States will also be on hand. A review of the Fleet Marine Force, 1,200 men strong, and an air show and formation flying by the Marine aviators will follow the base ball game. Three boxing bouts will be staged by the Marines for the visitors. After dinner the whole party will board the steamer for Washington. Tickets for the outing may be obtained at the National Press Club. M.0.F. W SELECTS MAJ. CHICAGO, May 11.—If Gustav Blair can get some money together— and he’ll consider all offers—he says he is going to Philadelphia and prove he is the missing Charlie Ross, the child whose kidnaping July 1, 1874, has never been solved. Interviewed while painting his house in suburban Riverdale, Blair said he has 12 affidavits to prove and countless witnesses to testify that he is Charlie Ross. His story is that he was brought to Compton, Ill, 80 miles west of Chi- cago, by the last surviving member of the kidnap gang and reared as a member of the family of Rienar Mil- ler, deceased. He assumed the name Gustav Blair, he said. “In 1908 Miller told me, in order to keep me from testifying in a law- suit in which he was involved,” Blair said, “that a man named John Hawk brought me to him from Philadel- phia. He said he killed Hawk when Hawk tried to dispose of me.
