By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, April 1—The steel industry’s outlook this week is not so cheerful, the magazine Steel reports. A moderate reduction in steel con- sumption by the automobile industry, sustained demand from farm imple- ment and tin-plate container manu- facturers, and a slight. improvement in structural and railroad buying, present a picture not nearly so en- couraging as the one at the outset of the second quarter last year. Steel works operations dropped another point to 45 per cent last week, w a reduction of 10 points from the peak reached in early February. Despite a rise in automobile as- semblies to 103,000 units, the high- est since September, 1929, Steel says it became apparent that the industry 1s coasting along on parts and mate- rials already acquired. Specifica- tions were in reduced volume, hold-up |, orders were issued by some manufac- turers, thus curtailing sheet and strip mill operations. Youngstown ingot production drop- ped 8 points to 52 per cent; Cleve- land dropped 3 points to 67 per cent; Pittsburgh advanced 3 to 38 per cent, FINANCIAL. while Pittsburgh steel pipe production dropped 10 points to 25 per cent. Wheeling steel ingot production ad- vanced 3 points to 95 per cent, while Buffalo was down 2 points to 35 per cent and other districts remained un Structural awards dropped to 8,100 tons last week, or two-thirds of the volume at this time last year. Pig iron shipments in the Great Lakes district in March were the larg- est in nine months and gave indica- tions of further gains, the review says. Coke shipments were the high- est in five years. Steel's iron and steel price com- posite is down 3 cents to $32.30, while the finished steel index holds at $54. Estimates Again Down. NEW YORK, April 1 () —Steel trade activity for the current week was estimated by the American Iron and Steel Institutee today at 44.4 per cent of capacity. This represents a decrease of 1.7 percentage points from the national average of the previous week, which in turn showed a small recession from the preceding period. ‘The estimated level compared with a month ago and 43.3 per cent for the corresponding period last year. Seize no opportunities. Save nothing. Invest nothing. Do nothing. Just fret—and fume. Be utterly miserable. Worry about yourself as you will be when old age comes. Worry about your children, who will be leaving school if you die. Worry about your wife. Learn to wince when you think of - her attempt to provide all that you neglected to provide. Picture her looking for a job—your favorite son shouting “Extree!” on the street corner. Do this thing right. Learn to look worried even if you have to practice in front of your mirror. Of course, if you prefer not to worry, you might look into this thing called Life Insurance. With the help of your telephone book, you will be able to locate intelligent agents representing this 70-year-old company with nearly a billion dol- lars of insurance in force. HERBERT 0.
