BRICE, BANKER, EXPIRES Director of National Metro- politan and First Riggs Cashier Dies. Arthur Tighman Brice, 84, a di- rector of the National Metrqpolitan Bank and the first cashier of the Riggs National Bank, died yesterday at his home, 1711 M street. Born April 11, 1850, his participa- tion in banking in this city began with his appointment as private sec- retary to the late William W. Cor- coran, one of Washington's foremost citizens and public benefactors. From there he entered the private banking house of Riggs & Co, which he served steadily until 1896, when it ob- tained & national charter, and he became the first cashier of the Riggs National Bank, Elected in 1909, Mr. Brice was elected a director of the National Metropolitan Bank in 1909. resigning only a few months ago. “No man has served its varied in- teresis with greater loyalty or greater fidelity,” George W. White, president, sald in a statement this morning. “His adherence to the principles and sound methods of banking in the face of swift and radical changes has never wavered. Of him it may truly | be said he has kept the faith as al banker and a man.” Mr. Brice, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, was & graduate of Co- lumbian College, now George Wash- ington University. Three Children Survive. He is survived by a son, Arthur T. Brice, jr., of San Francisco, and two daughters, Mrs. John F. Joline, jr. of Wayne, Pa, and Mrs. H. B. Chubb of Lawrence, Kans. Mrs. Grace Dyer Smith, widow of Frank Bird Smith of Washington, died at her residence in Seven Oaks, Kent, England, on March 23, in her 80th year. N, and Mrs. Sarah H. P. Dyer, she was a| cousin of Kate Douglas Wiggin. Very well known here, she later moved to Montclair, N. J., when her son was studying with Thomas A. Edison. Mr. Smith and her granddaughter Peggy will accompany the body to Washington Saturday on the Europa. Funeral services will be held probably on April 6, at 3110 Woodland drive, the home of her brother-in-law, E. Quincy Smith, who died here a short while ago. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
