CATHOLICS SEEK PROBE OF MEXICO Most Rev. M. J. Curley, at Mass Meeting, Asserts Plans Frustrated. Catholics of Washington Monday night called upon the government to investigate conditions in Mexico. This action was taken at a mass meeting, which packed Gonzaga Hall, and heard Most Rev. Michael J. Cur- ley, Archbishop of Baltimore, assert that the administration “has given in- structions to frustrate” efforts for an investigation of charges of widespread persecution of Catholics in Mexico. In this connection it was recalled that Benator Borah, Republican, of Idaho several weeks ago introduced a reso- lution providing for such an inquiry. “Let there be no doubt about it”| the archbishop continued, “the admin- istration has given instructions to frustrate further efforts either in be- half of persecuted Christians in Mex- ico. or with regard to a fair, impartial investigation of alleged violation of American rights.” Many Protests Cited. Archbishop Curley said it had been estimated a million resolutions and letters of protest against the alleged persecutions had been sent Presidem. Roosevelt and Secretary Hull. “Is it possible.” he continued, ‘thnt silence and opposition will be the only Tesponse to_these petitions? “In the first place, it must be mnde clear that there is no excuse for the | SALVATION ARMY UNIT TAKES NEW QUARTERS| Social Service Center Body Moves to Avoid Paying Further Rent on 0ld Site.
