In sn efiort to interest more vol- unteers in social wotk in the District of Columbia, the Council of Social Agencies Committee on Volunteer | Service will sponsor an intensive two- week course on delinquency and health starting Monday morning at the United States Chamber of Com- merce. Volunteer workers are necessary if | the work of the various Community Chest organizations is to be ade- quately performed, it was explained. because of the shortage of paid staff workers. The volunteers, after learn- ing the fundamentals of the subjects | to be taught during the course, will be assigned by the Committee on Volunteer Service. f Bates to Speak. The first meeting is to be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning with San- ford Bates, director of the Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice. as speaker. His subject will be, “Can Crime Be Controlled?” On Wednesday morning, April 3, there will be a round-table discussion on the general subject, “Delinquency Among Women.” This will be led by Capt. Rhoda J. Milliken, commanding the Women's Bureau of the Metro- politan Police Department. “Juvenile Delinquency” will be the general topic at a round table to be held April 5. Miss Louise McGuire, director of social service. Juvenis Court, will be the leader of this dis- cussion. On April 8, Dr. George C. Ruhland, health officer of the District of Co- lumbia, will speak on “Your City's Health.” Dr. Twombly Is Speaker. “Mental Hygiene in the Home” will be the subject of a talk by Dr. Har- riet Twombly on April 10. Dr. Twom- bly is senior psychiatrist at St. Eliza- beth's Hospital. The institute will close Friday morn- | ing, April 12, with two round-table discussions. The first will be on the subject of “Washington's Health Problem,” which will be led by Miss Beatrice Mullin, director of the Social Service Department of the George- town University Hospital. The sec- ond round table will be on the general for Washington.” This will be led by can Red Cross. SLAYER OF D. C. GIRL TO KNOW FATE SOON Murder Case Against Captain, 74, Due to Reach Jury Late in Day. The first-degree murder case against Capt. William Owens, 74-year- old dredge captain, was expected to reach the jury in District supreme | Court this afternoon. Capt. Qwens, who contends he was of unsound mind when he killed his sweetheart, Elsie Louise Bryant, 14, on July 2, 1931, told the jury yes- terday he has no recollection of the shooting. The young girl was shot by Owen at 456 M street southwest after he is said to have become obsessed with the belief she no longer cared for him. It was erroneously stated yesterday that th> shooting occurred at 470 M street southwest. Assistant United States Attorney Samuel F. Beach, who is prosecuting the case, indicated it would go to the jury late today. Owens was found to be of unsound mind after the shooting. but insisted on a rehearing so he might stand trial if found to be sane. Jordan, Nashville, Tenn., sales- man, and his 3-year-old daughter, Linda Lee, went for their last auto- mobile ride together yesterday. Two men, driving through Cherry lane, on the South Mountain Res- ervation, found the child’s body near her father's parked car. She had been shot through the head. Jordan himself lay close to the car, uncon- scious from a bullet wound. Police Chief Gilhooly said Jordan apparently had killed the child and then attempted suicide. He had been separated from his wife for two years, but had visited his daughter regu- larly and had often taken her riding. When he called today he spld it was to be a “farewell ride,” as he was “leaving for the West.” Grass Makers Idle.
