By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, March 21.—Grain prices averaged lower both early and late today, notwithstanding an intermedi- ate display of strength. Wheat temporarily recovered after an opening dip on commission house buying induced by the continued dry weather in the Southwest and further reports of dust storms. Selling at the start was due to action of the Gov- ernment in releasing Spring whnt[ growers from acreage reduction agree- ments. H. C. Donovan of Thompson & Mc- Kinnon said: “On’ a drive to the Southwest I tound wheat showing average to above average in condition through Southwestern and Central Kansas, but somewhat below average ir. Northeastern Kansas and South- eastern Nebraska. In Western Kan- sas and adjoining portions of other States conditions are very bad.” ‘The weather map showed precipita- tion over the Northwest, West and Ohio Valley, but clear weather pre- vailed in the Southwest, where mois- ture deficiency is serious. Notwithstanding the showers re- ported in parts of Oklahoma and Texas, wheat prices showed rallying power at the last. Corn developed independent weak- ness pecause of reports that pasture conditions were improving. corn was also influenced by a break in cotton values. CRISFIELD, Md., March 21.—The normal 60,000 acres of Irish potatoes planted annually in the two Eastern Shore of Virginia counties, will be cut this Spring to not more than 48,000 in Accomac and Northampton, it is believed. Through collective bargaining and co-operatior: with ‘seed and fertilizer dealers, potzto brokers and exchanges, each grower will be cut 20 per cent on last year's seed and fertilizer pur- chases. it is said Potato growers declare that for three years they have produced at a loss because of overproduction in sll potato-growing sections of the East, with the market having been forced below the cost of production. The acreage cut this year is said to be the first move toward a versi- fication of crops. With a view, there- fore, to changing the agricultural policy of the Eastern Shore, plans are being made to use other crops on part of the soil hftherto planted in potatoes. They will include peas and tomatoes to be grown for canning purposes, snap and lima beans and cabbage and strawberries for the early markets. BURLAP SALES DOWN.
