Referring specifically to a recent address by the Assistant Secretary of | Labor, Edward F. McGrady, Senator ‘Vandenberg, Republican, of Michigan last night criti- cized “the inso- lence and impu- dence of some sections of this administration.” This, Vanden- berg said in a statement, was “perhaps mcst amazingly illus- trated by the re- cent Boston speech of the*First Assistant Secre- tary of Labor * * * who spoke McGrady. i Edward F. McGrady on the bench’ when four highly hon- ored and respected United States dis- trict judges ruled against the con- | stitutionality of certain sections of | New Deal legislation.” . | Told “to Organize.” “Worse,” Vandenberg said, “this member of the litt'> cabinet told this ‘ labor meeting ‘to organize to such an extent as to make it unhealthy for a judge to defy you.’ | “It mak>s no difference what the | decisions were, nor what the deci- | sions decided so far in this blatant| contempt is concerned. Either this | ! is a land of government and law or 14t is not. There is no middle ground. * * * . [ “It is time that some of these| bureaucrats were taught that they are not monarchs of ali they survey. If correctly quoted, McGrady deserves to be impeached.” Immunity a Question. The controversy between Con- troller General McCarl and Secre- tary Swanson over payment of trav-| eling expenses - for dependents of . naval officers, Vandenberg said, raised the “broad question of the immunity | of high administrators to the ordi- | nary restraints of law.” | POLITICIAN IS SHOT Kansas City Night Club Operator | Waylaid by Trio. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March '11.—Profes- sional night club performers tonight declared war on debutantes and so- cially prominent young men who have been steadily invading the night club fleld. Holding that the debutantes con- stitute “unfair competition” because they take the jobs of needy profes- sionals, the American Federation of Actors, affiliated with the American Federation of Labor, will meet tomor- row night to discuss it. When debutantes learned of the proposed campaign against them, they belittled the distinction of being listed in the Social Register and insisted they needed the jobs as much as any one. Officials of the union, of which Ed- die Cantor is honorary president, complained that the debutantes were entering into a field already over- crowded. Last Fall professional models waged a _successful fight against debutantes who modeled for a livelihood and an agreement was finally reached be- iween the groups. —_— POSTAL BILL OFFERED All vacancies in the postal service would be filled by the appointment of substitutes within two months after passages of the act, under a bill intro- duced by Representative Stack, Dem- ocrat, of Pennsylvania. ‘The measure is designed to aid sub- stitutes, whose small wage has brought | many complaints in the past few| years, since the mail volume fell off.
