CLEVELAND, March 11.—The na- tional average of steel operations rose two points to 50 per cent, through sustained shipments and consumption of flat-rolled steel and a moderately broadening demand for structural steel and pipe, the magazine Steel states today. Sheet and strip mills, operating at 75 per cent, have accumulated suffi- cient backlogs, mainly from automo- bile manufacturers, to continue at this level for five of six weeks, with specifi- cations extending as far ahead as May. Automobile assemblies, the magazine states, increased to 86,000 units last week from 83,900 the week before. The industry now estimates second quarter production at from 300,000 to 400,000 per month. Higher prices of farm products are stimulating demand for agricultural implements, Steel continues. Manu- facturers are experiencing their best operations in five years and some are encountering a shortage of skilled machine operators. Tin plate mills are scheduled for an advance from the current rate of 80 per cent operations. Two leading can manufacturers have consumed more tin plate so far this year than in any similar period in their history. Railroad orders expected to call for 100,000 tons of rails are being de- ferred until Fall, the magazine reports. Steel’s iron and steel price composite is reduced 3 cents to $32.40: finished steel unchanged at $54¢ and the scrap index is down 12 cents to $11.04. Week’s Estimates Down. NEW YORK, March 11 (#.—Fo!- | lowing a week of moderate recov | steel operations showed another sm: | decline this week, according to the estimate of the American Iron and Steel Institute issued today. Mill schedules were placed at 47.1 per cent for the national average against 48. per cent in the previous week. The rate currently estimated com- and 46.2 per cent a year ago. Th decline from last week is 1.1 points or 2.3 per cent Combination Sea Food a la Newberz (Stnce 1858) s, 1107 Connecticut Avenue INVESTMENT PROPERTIES Several apartment houses and residences which can be purchased at prices that will return a substantial s um on amounts invested.
