Transfers approximated 330,000 shares. The preferred shares of American Chain got up 5 points, and gainers of fractions to 2 or more included the preference issues of Commonwealth & % | Southern, United Corp., American & Foreign Power, American Power & Light and International Paper. A summary of a supplemental report, dated October 25 1933, in connec- tion with the temporary Federal de- posit insurance fund, includes the number of depositors and the amount of deposits in the local banks at that time. There were 392,622 depositors who carried deposits not exceeding $2,500, an aggregate of 9,342 who held de- posits over $2500 but not exceed- ing $10,000, and only 1,878 depositors with $10,000, but not exceeding $50.- 000. Only 420 depositors in the banks here had over $50,000 on deposit, these deposits including State, county and municipal funds, as well as United States Government deposits, and de- posits made by other banks. In the 21 banks licensed at the time, there were 404,262 depositors. While the total seems like a .very high percentage of the total popula- tion of the Capital, the report shows that one person may have several dif- ferent accounts and that the various institutional deposits are also an im- portant factor in the summary. Controller O’'Connor also_includes & summary of the credit unions in the various Government departments and elsewhere. There are now 22 of these organizations. Gold Delay Causes Regret. Regret was expressed in the finan- cial district today over the further postponement in the gold clause de- cision. It had been hoped the ruling would come after the close of the New York Stock Exchamge today and could be digested during the Lincoln anniversary holiday on the big ex- change tomorrow. What the markets will do when the decision comes out cannot be fore- cast. In the financial district here, however, majority opinion seems to be that any very startling move either way is unlikely. If the ruling should support the administration, there would be no reason for any extensive move, financiers say. If the decision is unfavorable, it has been announced for some weeks that steps will be taken to offset such a ruling. Ending of the uncertainty, regard- less of the findings, will prove bene- ficial, bankers say. Conference Opens Tomorrow. ‘The Midwinter Trust Conference, under A. B. A. sponsorship, opens in New York tomorrow. Robert V. Fleming and Hilleary G. Hoskinson of the Riggs National Bank will join the ‘Washington delegation already an- nounced and attend the sessions. It was reported in the financial dis- trict today that the attendance at the American Institute of Banking’s thirtieth annual dinner next Satur- day night will go over the 600 mark. ‘This will be the largest turnout in years. Washington sent a_ large delega- tion to the annual dinner of New York Chapter, American Institute of Banking. Among those present were ‘Walton L. Sanderson, president Wash- ington Chapter; Miss Constane Fogle, an official in the chapter; Joshua Evans, jr., Wilmer J. Waller, Hilleary G. Hoskinson, James E. Dulin, jr.; Frederick P. H. Siddons and Elmer Flather. Today’s Trading on Exchange. ‘Washington Railway & Electric pre- ferred stock was particularly active and strong on the Washintgon Stock Ex- change today, selling at 102. Such utilities as American Telephone, Consolidated Gas and Public Service of New Jersey were only a trifle lower. Some observers expressed the opinion that, while the Supreme Court’s delay in the gold controversy tended to in- crease the feeling of suspense, there was much less probability of a drastic change in the markets either way when the decisions finally become known. Board room guessers advanced the thought that the court might make its awaited announcement tomorrow af- ternoon. These based their belief on the fact that tomorrow is an American holiday and that, if the judgment is revealed after 2 p.m. foreign specu- lators will be unable to take advantage of it to the disadvantage of the dollar because their markets will be closed At the same time, they pointed out, Congress will be in session and im- mediate steps can be taken to over- come an adverse ruling. Aside from the gold factor, part of the markets' sluggish behavior was at- tributed to indications that business and industry may reach their peaks much earlier this Spring than in the last several years.
