FINANCIA BUILDING CLIMBS |LARGEST BANKS SHARPLY N SOUTH Construction Awards Reach|Chase and National City . Highest Mark in Three Years During 1934.. By the Associated Pre: BALTIMORE, January 8.—Con- struction contracts awarded in 16 Southern States during 1934 resched the highest total in thres years, the Manufacturers’ Record reported. The aggregate of $509,874,000 ex- ceeded the 1933 total by 34 per cent and the 1932 figures by 19 per cent, the report said. This record was set despite a sharp falling off of contract awards in De- cember from the high mark of $55,- 625,000 set up last Novemper. The December total was given as $32,092,- 000, which also was a drop of 7 per tlzent from the amount for December, Of the total awards for 1934 road, paving and bridge contracts led all other construction activities with an aggregate of $191,304,000. Industrial and engineering projects ranked a close second with awards totaling $185,284,000. The 12-month total for public building work was $99.500,000, while general building awards in 1934 ran to $33,786,000. Pointing out that many State leg- islatures will convene this month, the report predicted greater advances in highway construction in line with new Federal regulations. The end of 1934 found large sums being expended in industrial expan- sion, the report said. Besides invest- ments in new plant construction, numerous factories turning out a di- versity of products were being mod- ernized and rehabilitated. Levee, revetment and sea wall con- struction loomed large in the South’s 1934 building program, as Southern waterways were improved to facilitate navigation. School buildings figured prominent- ly in the 1934 program, awards for this class of construction totaling | $31,927,000. General construction—all privately financed—Ilast year kept pace with other building, residential projects dominating this class of work. BELL SYSTEM REPORTS 298,000 MORE PHONES |4 By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January D—The Associated Bell System had a net gain | of 208,000 telephones in 1934, it was announced by the American Tele- phone & Telegraph Co. In 1933 the REPORT INCREASES, - Heads Give Deposits Credit for Higher Earnings. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 8.—Stock- holders controlling over $3,600,000,000 of assets received annual reports from their officers today, as the two largest banks of the country, the Chase Na- tional and the National City, held their yearly meetings. ‘Winthrop W. Aldrich, chairman of the board of the Chase National Bank, reported net earnings of the institu- tion for 1934 at $16,509,309, with no special reserves or charge-offs made during the year, compared with net of $11,470,000 after $13,828,094 write- offs and reserves in the previous year. Reporting to shareholders of the Na- tional City Bank, James H. Perkins, chairman of the board, set profits of the institution for the year at $14,- 623,463 after allowing for special re- serves of $2,405,000. This was an im- provement of $2,112,255 over the re- Sults for 1933. Net earnings of City Bank-Farmers Trust Co., an affiliate, were reported to be $1,322,868, a gain of $311,630 over the previous year. Heads of these large institutions pointed to substantial rises in deposits during the year as a factor adding to bank earnings difficulties because of the lack of suitable investment chan- nels. In both cases Government ge- curities were bought in large quanti- ties to employ the increased deposits. Total deposits of Chase National rose $345,000,000 during the year to $1,709,800,000, while holdings of Gov- ernment and Federally guaranteed is- sues increased $296,370,000. National City’s deposits, at $1,395,000,000, were $278,000,000 above those at the end of 1933, while United States cbligations were $203,000,000 higher at $431,- 000,000, — [NEW YORK BANK STOCKS NEW YORK.
