BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 8.—Record- breaking attendance during the first & | two days of the local automobile show promises & brisk upturn in January motor sales over those a year ago, ac+ cording to sales managers of motor manutacturing companies. Polnting out that dealers throughout the country have contracted to buy from factories 30 to 35 per cent more cars than in 1934, these sales man- agers asserted that deliveries, barring unexpected labor troubles, wéuld be much earlier this year. Stepping up of production has not | A been hampered by strikes as it was in 193¢, with the result that January production schedules will exceed those of last January. This ought to be good news to many unemployed, since the motor industry employs, directly and indirectly, about 10 per cent of the gainfully employed workers in this country. Models being displayed here will be put on exhibition throughout the country in the next few weeks. The machines shown are standard products right off the assembly line and not “hand-made- jobs” built specially for show purposes, excepting the very high-priced models in which “custom- making” always plays a large part. Cincinnati, St. Louis, Grand Rapids and Los Angeles now are holding shows. Newark, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee and Washington will open their shows next Saturday. Philadelphia, Brooklyn and other centers will open shows next Monday. Toledo will open January 18 and Columbus, Ohio, January 19. The auto shows in Canada parallel those in the United States, as the manufacturers there agreed on a change in merchan- dising policy which permits a national release of new models at the same time. There was an increase in the general level of wholesale commodity prices in the week ended January 5, according to the index of the Nationa) Fertilizer Association. The index for the latest week was 76.8, based on the 1926-28 average as 100. The index was 76.3 a week ago, 75.5 a month ago and 68.6 a year ago. ‘The rise which occurred last week carried the index above the highest int reached in 1934 and resulted in he highest level since the week of January 31, 1931, when the index was 1.2, 8ix of the 14 groups in the index advanced last week and 8 remained unchanged. The largest increase and the one which was primarly responsi- ble for the rise of the index was in the grains, feeds and live stock group, which advanced to 847 from 82.0 in the week preceding. The increase of this group was due largely to sharp advances in live stocke prices. The fats and oils group continued the sharp upward movement which has been in progress for the past several months. The advances which occur- red 1n the fuel, textiles, fertilizer ma- terials and miscellaneous commodities groups were of minor proportions. Prices of 35 individual commodities increased last week, while 9 declined, compared with 29 advances and 13 declines in the preceding week. The grains, feeds and live stock group led in the, number of advances, with 10 commodities in this group advancing in price. Seven items in the fats and oils group and six in the textiles group rose last week. The largest advances occurred in live stock quotations, with all of the live stock prices in the index moving upward. The price of sheep has doubled in the last five weeks. Other commodities which rose in price last week included phosphate rock, tankage, corn, butter, cottonseed oil. eggs. potatoes, cotton, silk. n T O Reg. $15.75 Lounge Chair. Opinion was that & number of the buyers had delayed their trips until next week, when the convention of the National Retail Dry Goods Association dpens here. Consumer response to January sales offerings has been better than antici- pated in many sections of the country, it is reported. Mail orders also have heen rather heavy. While conceding that demand for percales has improved since the first of the year, converters are understood to feel that there is no immediate reason for an advance in quotations. According to estimates submitted at the annual meeting of the Association of Manufacturers’ Representatives here, sales of all types of nationally- known fodo products showed an aver- age increase of 10 per cent in volume last year. ——— e DOLLAR GOES HIGHER IN LONDON DEALINGS By the Associated Press. World cotton production was estle mated today by the Bureau of Agrie cultural Economics at 23,000,000 bales, the smallest since the crop year 1923-4. The new estimate was 200,000 bales less than the November estimate and 3,100,000 bales less than production last year. The downward revision since No- vember was based on reports of re- duced crop prospects in India. The Indian crop is now expected to be smaller than last year. Exports of American cotton during November and the first half of De- cember continued comparatively small, with shipments during the four months ending November 30 totaling $1,466,000 bales, 44 per cent less than during the corresponding period in {1933 and 42 per cent less than the 10-year average for that period. Mill activity and total cotton con- sumption in Europe during the first four months of the current season was reported as ‘“materially less” than during the corresponding period of last year, while activity and con- | sumption in Japan and China have been “substantially greater.” Little hope was held by the bureau for any material improvement in mill activity in Europe in the immediate SAFEWAY SALES HIGHER.
