DAILY SHORT STORY: SMOKE SCREEN Sam's Jealousy Was Unfounded, and Annie’s Patience Almost Snapped; Then the House Caught Fire. BY E. H. garded the soft pleading in Annic's eyes and said coldly, bitterly: “You're just a flirt, that's all. You're just like & lot of other women—one man isn’t enough.” “Just a& minute, Sam,” his wife said quietly. “You've gone too far. You've said too much. You're go- ing to be sorry.” It was funny, Sam reflezted sav- agely, how little it took to end happi- ness. One bridge party and it was all over. One bridge party consisting of three other couples and themselves, at Prentis Brown’s. Everybody having a good time. A few drinks, but not too many. Anyway, only one too many. Grant Rogers taking Annie to the | kitchen to mix that one too many. Himself following them, not to spy, just to get a drink. Seeing Annie in Grant’s arms— Her voice aroused him from his gloomy reverie. “You saw me in Grant’s arms,” she said coldly, “but I wasn't there willingly. I was trying to free myself when you came in. I have just as much right to suspect you of being infatuated with that blond down the hall in 7-B.” “Agh!” Sam snarled. “I've seen you two leaving the build- ing together several times. If I were meanly suspicious like you—" “Throwing out & smoke screen to save yourself, eh?” sneered Sam. “I'm leaving you tomorrow,” said Annie determinedly. She went quickly into the bed room and Sam heard the | key turn in the lock. His eyes went | to the sofa across the room and he | glared at it savagely. | Later in the night Sam dreamed that he was being pursued by a gigan- tic dragon and that he ran screaming from it. As he stumbled down the side of a mountain he could hear the | dragon roaring behind him. It was | nearing him, breathing fire, and smoke billowed about him. Just as the flames began to lick about his shoulders his mind went ter- ribly blank—— And he woke and heard the murmur of many voices near by. A wave of cold, smoke-filled air swept over him. A tall man wearing a dark slicker bent over him. “Take it easy. You had a narrow escape. but you're all right now. The building is doomed.” Sam struggled upright and found that he was in the little park across | from the apartment house. He stood | for a moment, swaying dizzily; then | he heard a terrified screaming and the | sound stopped his heart. That was | Annie’s voice and she was in danger. | He clutched the tall man by the arm, and shook his head to clear his aching | brain. | “Thought they were all out” said | the man tensely, and his eyes followed Sam’s to the second story of the flame- ridden building. They saw a woman | “I AM LEAVING YOU TOMORROW,* SAID ANNIE DETERMINEDLY. DAVIS, there, leaning out the window, €am ran swiftly across the street, evaded the clutch- ing nands of fire- men and police- men, and plunged into the smoke- filled lover hall- way. He fcll weakly across the lower steps of the stalr- way as the smoke filled his lungs. Gasping, coughing, on hands and knees, he made his way up the stairs. He fell back as he reached the up- per landing, for flames ard smoke flared out at him, scorching his face and hands. Blind- ed, he reeled down the hallwe y—heard screams at his left, plunged through an open door—found himself at an open window beside the screaming woman and gasped in great lungfuls of fresh air. “Annie,” he cried, and took the fig- ure in his arms. He turned and stag- gered toward the door. As he made his way out of the room it seemed to him that he was back in that night- mare again; that the fire and smoke- breathing dragon was pursuing him again. He was dimly conscious of falling many times: that his pajamas were being burned from his body, but he clutched her to him closely, telling her that he was sorry, telling her of his great love— He was conscious of being at the turn of the stairs. His foot slipped and he fell and kept on falling—and then the world exploded into a great, fiery ball— Sam opened aching eyes and shut them again quickly, for it felt as if two hot needles had been thrust into them. He tried it again in a moment and saw the nurse standing beside his bed. “Feeling better now?" she asked. He nodded and asked, “Is my wife all right?” The nurse smiled and moved be- yond his range of vision—— And then Annie was looking down at him, and he saw that her eyes were filled with tears. “You're so brave,” she said. “T'd die for you any time,” he whis- pered. “I thought Id never get you out. If you had to die, I wanted to die, too.” He saw then the strange little smile on her lips. She regarded him with loving eyes and shook her head. “You didn't save me” she said softly. “You saved that blond in 7-B. { was already out of the building. She stopped at the look of horror in Sam’s eyes, bent swiftly down and kissed his blistered lips. Then they looked deeply into each other's eyes and laughed. (Copyright. 1934.)
