While the retail volume's value de- creased almost half between 1929 and 1933, several businesses declined com- paratively little. The number of gas- | oline filling stations increased 49,000 in the four years and the sales vol- ume of $1,531,724,000 was only 14 per cent less than the 1929 sales volume.
