Net earnings of the Capital Transit Co. in October totaled $90.238, accord- ing to the monthly financial statement filed today with the Public Utilities Commission. This compared with net earnings of over $55.000 in September. Total net earnings for the year have now passed the $919.000 mark. For the first 11 months since the street car line consolidation went into effect on December 1, 1933, the transit company has earned $3.83 per share on the stock. On the Washington Stock Exchange today, Capital Transit stock was in good demand, five 10-share lots and { seven shares seiling at 28':, off 1, from yesterday, when one sale took place at 29. It closed 28 bid and 29 asked. Mergenthaler Linotype sold at 35 to- day, against the last previous sale at 2613, the sharp advance being due to the annual report. For the 10-month period of this year, however, net income totaling $16.692,517 is $1913,561 less than for the corresponding months last year, although the revenues for the period exceeded the 1933 figure by $2.937,869. NEW YORK, November 27.—Profit taking in utilities and parts of the in- dustrial list halted the advance in most stocks today. Some of the rails, metals and specialties, however, worked moderately higher. The late tone was irregular. U. S. Steel, Con- solidated Gas, American Telephone and American Can were down about a point each, while Santa Fe, Du Pont and Dome showed small net gains. Homestake Mining gained 15 points. Trading was quieter on the reac- tion, transfers approximating 950,000 shares. The utilities, which yesterday per- formed with some of their old-time vigor, bore the brunt of selling in the early hours. Although they were un- able to come back to any great extent, they turned extremely quiet. Indus- trials also were under pressure.
