PILOTS TO TRAIN INNAVY GLIDERS New Methods Will Be Tried in| Preparing for Flights in Airplanes. An entirely new theory in the train- ing of military airplane pilots will be put to the test by the Navy Bureau of | Aeronautics, which has just purchased | two gliders, in which a selected group | of student naval aviators will be given instruction at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. before beginning air- plane flight training. In this way the Navy will seek to| check in actual practice the statement | of glider pilots in this country and abroad that gliding is a valuable preparation for flight training and that it not only will shorten the dual in- struction time of student airplane pilots | but will produce better aviators. | Lieut. Comdr. Ralph Barnaby, first! glider pilot in the United States to be | licensed, has been sent from the Navy | Department to Pensacola to indoctrinate | the fiight instructors there in the art | of flying the two gliders and in the | methods of teaching flying by their use. “Should preliminary tests prove satis- factory,” the Navy Department an- nounced, “it is planned to train a num- ber of candidates for aviation training in glider fiying prior to their having any powered aircraft Instruction, to study their records through the re- | mainder of the regular fiight course in comparison with students not glider- | trained, and to determine whether there | is any discernible difference. | “It is the belief of those associated | with glider work that the glider may | be used successfully to replace or at least simplify the elimination training, that it will shorten dual instruction time and, by increasing the confidence of the student and developing aircraft ‘sense’ or ‘feel,’ produce better aviators.” Better spend FOR FORT BLISS, TEX. mained uncertain.
