JAPANESE REDUCE U.S. COTTON ORDERS| | {Total Exports Drop Laid to Smaller Trade in Far East. Japan’s curtailment of cotton pur- chases during the first nine months of this season was declared yesterday by the Commerce Department to have been | responsible for a decrease of $42,000,000 in the value of this country’s cotton exports. | During the last cotton season Japan was the leading staple buyer in this| country, the heaviest movement pres-| aging the Manchurian and Shanghal military invasions. However, Japanese officials denied reports that the cotton ‘was to be used for munition purposes, attributing the heavy movement to manufacturers taking advantage of a depressed market. Between August, 1931, and April, 1932, the Japanese took 2,040,000 bales, val- ued at $79,000,000. For the same period during the season, 1,362,000 bales, val- | ued at $51,000,000, have been exported ' for consumption in Japan. Valued at $251,000,000, So far this American ers have sh.pbed 6,521,000 bales, valued | at $251,000,000. to all sections of the world. The department said this is a decline of 876,000 bales in comparison with last season’s shipping records. “The smaller exports for this season,” the department explained, “are to be ac- counted for probably by the smaller tak- ing of American cotton by the foreign mills and partly by a smaller accumula- tion in port stocks as compared with last_season.” The decline in the shipments to the Far East was only partly offset by the larger figures for Burope, but with the exception of the Netherlands, larger ehipments were recorded from all Eu- Topean countries, it was stated. 436,000 April Total. Exports of cotton during April| amounted to 436,000 bales, valued at| £16,742,000, compared with 438.000 bales, | valued at $17,957,000 for March, and 545,000 bales, valued at $20,518,000 for April, 1932, As' compared with the figures for | April. 1932, larger shipments were re- corded during April this year for Ger- many, Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Bulgaria, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Mexico, ‘with smaller figures for the other countries. | 4TH MARINES CHIEF | MAY BE RELIEVED| Report of Cel.
