While Government legislation and executive machinery are making an ef- fort to stem the rising tide of unem- ployment in this country. Secretary of Labor Perkins said yesterday there was no available official data on present em- ployment or the number of jobless ‘workers. In a book published by the Russell Bage Foundation on “Statistical Pro- cedure of Public Employment Offices,” Miss Perkins said: “How many carpenters. machinists. clerical. farm and other workers are in need of jobs? How many jobs actualy exist and in what occupations and in- dustries? Who knows? No one.” Since 1931, the Federal Government has not undertaken an unemploymens census and because of lack of official data the monthly estimate of President William Green of the American Federa- tion of Labor is being quoted in Gov- ernment circles as the nearest to the actual conditions prevailing. In April, 1931. the Census Bureau #aid there were 6,500.000 jobless in the country. Green said unemployment stands today at 13.000.000. His esti- mate is based on reports received from the various trades unions throughout the country. Miss Perkins asserted in the founda- tion's book that she approved the sug- gestion made by the foundation for statistical procedure in public employ- ment offices. Wins French Peace Prize. PARIS.
