FINANCIAL GOVERNMENT BOND PRICES ARE LOWER #Commodity” and Convert- ible Issues Take Leader- ship in Trading. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Epecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 19.—Striking price changes featured today's active bond market. ‘The decline of United States Govern- ment obligations, the advance of so- called “commodity” issues and con- wvertible debentures, the bidding for bonds of “silver currency countries” and offerings of gilt-edged rail and public utility mortgages presinted some sharp contrasts. United States Treasury 4'4s of 1952 led the downswing in governments, los- ing more than a point in the forenoon on further talk of inflation in Wash- ington, the weakness of the American dollar in terms of foreign currencies, and statements about the ban on gold exports, except under certain restric- tions. In contrast to the softness of Amer- {can Government loans was the strength in foreign government bonds. At one time the German 5!,s were up 2 points and the 7s on the same movement were up almost that much. United Kingdom 4s of 1990 jumped 1': points to 797%, a new high for the past two years. During this bulge the 5':s of 1937 re- gained a portion of their earlier decline. Initial offerings of Canadian govern- me! resulted from Ottawa dispatches which told of decreased revenues of the Dominion during the fiscal year ended March 31. Meanwhile the securities of the Argentine government extended re- cent rallies. The rise of commodities was mir- rered in such issues as American Metal 51,5, Chile Copper 5, Goodrich Tire & Rubber convertible 6s, Otis Steel first 6s, United States Rubber 5s and Rem- ington-Rand 5'.s, with warrants. This sort of bidding also was responsible for the betterment in American & Foreign Power 5s and International Telephone Debenture 5s. These were sought as silver futures ri buyers pointing out that silver countries generally should benefit from any change in the rela- tive positions of metals. Grain Market By the Associated Press. CHICAGO. April 19—In a buying stampede rarely paralleled except in war times, wheat shot almost 5 cents upward today, and reached 70 cents a bushel at one time for September de- livery. The sensational rise eclipsed season ‘high-price records for wheat, corn, oats and other grains, and went hand in hand with Washington reports of in- flation moves and with spectacular advances in foreign exchange. Top- most quotations of the cay were reached just before the market closed, with late sharp setbacks because of profit taking. Wheat closed excited 13-21; above yesterday's finish, corn 1:-11% up‘ oass 3, advanced and provisions un- thnnzed to a rise of 30 cents. VHEAT— Open. High. Close. L4 73 September . The day's trading limit of 300 points, an advance of 3 cents an ounce, was reached in early trading in September, October, November and December options. There was a turnover of 49 lots, or 1,225,000 ounces, at the opening. —_— Washington Stock Exchange SALES. Anlccsus & Potomac R. WEDNESDAY, CURB ISSUES SOAR TONEW HIGH MAR Leaders Mount Rapidly .as Active Bidding Puts Up Many Issues. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 19.—Nearly a score of leading issues on the Curb Ex- change today reached record h prices for the year as active bidding drove dealings forward at a quickened pace. Agitation for further rate reductions resulted in some offerings of It public utilities, such as Electric Bon Share, American Gas & Electric, Niagara-Hudson Power and Citles’ Service. Standard Ofl of Indiana was fractionally higher. Overnight news included reports of decreased crude ofl output and gasoline inventories, increased steel production, a betterment in many miscellaneous trade lines and only a slight decline, despite the religious holidays, in electri- cal consumption last week. The renewsl of inflationary propos- als at Washington sent commodities kyward and brought brisk bidding for a long line of industrial issues. Trans- actions in the first two hours were nearly 75 per cent greater than in the same Tuesday period. Many sizabie blocks were lnterspersed among the 100 and odd share lots on the tape. A few of the peak prices recorded in the forenoon included Deere & Co., New Jersey Zinc, Newmont Mining, Gulf Oil, Humble Ofl, Swift & Co., Swift International. Hudson Bay Min- ing. South Penn Oil, National Sugar| Montgomery Ward A and| Refining, National Bond & Share. The commodity issues, rubber, grain and metal shares, first moved forward. They were followed by the oils and the implement and mail order stocks. Then some of the corpo- rations with large security portfolios, as Newmont Mining, National Bond & Share, and Insurance Co. of North America, attracted attention. Prospects of a 20 per cent reduction in anthracite miners’ wages lifted Glen Alden Coal. Increased sales reports bettered such automotive company quo- .| tations as those of Cord Corporaticn, o Ford Motor of Canada A, Stutz Motors *|and Ford Motor, Ltd. British-Ameri- can Tobacco, which does a _sizeablc business in the Far East, Brazillan Light and Traction, and American & Foreign Power, as well as other shares that would naturally benefit from the rise of silver metal, were also in de- mand. New York Cotton Special Dispatch to The Star. A—IS STEEL PRODUCTION IN SHARP ADVANCE Rate of Output Is Now 23 Per Cent of Capacity, Says Journal. FRF By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, April 19.—A rise in steel ingot production to 23 per cent of capacity, the hl?hesl rate in about & year and comparing with 191, per cent a week ago, was reported today by Iron Age. The present rate is above the ' | monthly average for any month since March, 1932, as computed by the Amer- ican Iron and Steel Institute. “Almost every district except the At- lantic seaboard,” said the survey, “has ; | shown marked improvement within the past week. The Pittsburgh district is now at 18 per cent, the Chicago district about 23 per cent, Cleveland is at 35 per cent, Youngstown and adjacent | Ohio districts at 23 per cent and the Wheeling district at 40 per cent. There have -also been gains at Birmingham and:Buffalo. Aggregate orders received /by some steel companies thus far in April are considerably in excess of their entire March bookings.” Automabile and tin plate orders con- tinue to be the leading influences in lifting steel production, Iron Age said, 2 | but “there is evidence of greater diversi- fication of orders.” “Some of the new steel business seems to represent delayed March demand and is plainly of a seascnal character, but there is almost a complete absence of speculative buying except to some ex- tent in pig iron, and virtually all orders are for immediate shipment, the urgent | demands making it difficult for mills to_meet delivery requirements.” The brewing industry is contributing some orders, “but many brewers are de- laying plans pending a clarification of the outlook.” Three issues of Iron Age have listed brewing construction projects totaling ubout $17,000,200.
