The two policemen, eye-witnesses anc others testified at the inquest that Courtney, whom th¢ volice were pur- suing in the belief he had held up a laundry branch at Fifth and H streets northeast a few minutes before the shooting, turned on the officers, and reached for his breast pocket. ' It was then that they shot, the policemen said. *Had Description. Ryan and Mower, who had been given & description of the hold-up man, were cruising in search of him when they saw Courtney near Second and H streets northeast. They told the jury they stopped and called to the man, who answered the description, and he at once began to run. They said they fol- lowed on foot, continuing to call him to | halt, until he made the move toward his pocket. At Casualty Hospital, where Courtney was taken after he had been shot, he told police he ran from them because he had a numbers game book in his pocket.
