ROOSEVELT IS SEEN LOOKING FOR CAMP Speculations Arise After Visit y; of President to Rapi- E+ dan Retreat. President Roosevelt's visit yesterday to the Rapidan fishing camp used by President Hoover as & week end retreat has given rise to speculation that he is contemplating establishing something of the kind for himself, but considerably closer to Washington than this isolated spot in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Enthusiastic Over Idea. Mr. Roosevelt is known to be enthusi- astic over the idea of the presidential retreat, where he could go for an after- noon picnic or a week end rest, and | where he could hold informal confer- ences, but he has no definite spot in mind at present. ‘While the President has no intention of remaining in Washington throughout the Summer—it being his purpose to g0 to his ancestral home at Hyde Park on the Hudson River soon after Con- gress adjourns—he is hopeful of locht- ing a suitable spot not more than an hour’s ride from Washington, and the members of his family friends could go at short notice. dan Camp yesterday is understood to | have been in connection with his pur- in locating just such a place of own. The Spring weather suf i gested & ride into the countr: and the President is understood to have taken this opportunity as a means of enjoy- ing a ride in the open, as well as doing some scout work in connection Wwith finding & suitable retreat. This was his first full holiday since becoming Presi- dent and with Mrs, Roosevelt, their son John, Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt, Secretary of Interior Ickes and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Morgenthau, jr, and a few oth- ers they left the White House shortly after 10 oclock and motored to the Virginia mountains. The President ap- peared to enjoy the outing. He was| cheered frequently along the way and he was impressed with the beauties of Spring foliage, particularly the blossom- ing fruit trees. Trip Made in Roadster. The drive to the camp was made in Mrs. Roosevelt’s roadster, with Mrs. Roosevelt herself at the wheel. On the return journey the President drove in one of the big White House cars with the top down. Less than two hours was spent at the camp itself. Picnic lunch was served in the so- called town hall of the Hoover build- ings. Before starting on the journey back to Washington the party traveled over the newly constructed Skyland road to Panorama, pausing several times to admire the scenery. A visit to the forestation camp near Luray, Va., had been planned, but the hour was so late it was put off until another time. At Panorama W. E. Carson, chairman of the Virginia State Con- servation and Development Commis- sion, left the party after acting as guide to the presidential camp and over the new mountain roadway. Be- fore leaving Panorama, the President was introduced to a number of West- ern engineers who were visiting the Shenandoah National Park. The presidential party arrived back at the White House at 6:30 pm. The automobile in which Secretary Ickes was riding in the caravan collided with another automobile at Falls Church, Va., but- the only damage done was a couple of broken fenders. Others in the party were Col. Louis Howe, one of the President’s secretaries; Miss Marguerite Le Hand, the President's|# personal secretary, and Horace Al- right, director of the national park em. i WOLF AT DOOR RACCOON Police Relieve Troubled Chicagoan | ‘Who Sent Phone Call. CHICAGO, April 7 (#).—“There's a wolf at the door,” a telephone caller told Desk Sergt. Michael Gerl “That,” said the sergeant, “is really nothing’ new. The policemen haven't been paid for months.” However, he sent out a couple of officers who captured the “wolf,” which wasn't a wolf, but a raccoon. One of the officers said he'd keep the captive as a pet if no owner turns up. —_— Actually 2 Suits in One!
