C, MONDAY, MARCH WAR-TIME COMMANDER OF 77th BRIGADE DIES Gen. Lucius H. Durfes, Retired Army Officer, Served in Spanish and World Wars. Brig. Gen. Lucius H. Durfee, U. 8. A, retired, war-time commander of the 77th Brigade of the 39th Division, died at his home in Riverside, Calif., yes- terday, according to word received at the War Department. He was 72 years old, Qen. Durfee was a native of Char- don, Ohio, and was commissioned from the United States Military Academy in the 17th Infantry in 1886. He served in the Spanish War lnd was cited for try in action Santiago, for which he was I'l.rd:d the silver star. During the World War he was pro- moted to brigadier general. Harry Burgess, former Governor of the Panama Canal Zone, who died Saturday at Hot Springs, Ark., after an illness which forced his retirement several months 2go, was en route to Washington today for burial in Arlington National Ceme- tery. Full milif u.ry ‘honors will be accorded Gen, Burgess tomorrow, with services in the Fort Myer Chapel at 2 p.m. Chaplain Ralph C. Deibert of Fort Myer, will officiate. Gen. , who was 61, became Governor of the Canal Zone in 1828 and his resignation was announced by former President Hoover last Fall. The general had been in ill health for some time and while on extended leave from the Canal Zone, he went to Hot Springs to recuperate. He was succeeded as governor of the zone by Brig. Gen. Julian L. Schiey. Gen. Burgess played an important part in the building of the huge Gov- having been in charge of designs and surveys. His military career included service in France as commander of the 16th and 30th Engineer Divisions. After the war he filled the important post of | maintenance engineer at the Panama | Canal before being appointed governor. Born at Starkville, Miss, he graduated from West Point in 1895 lnd commissioned in the Engineer Corps. He went back to West Point in 1898 for a two-year detail as an engineering | instructor.
