MILADY BEAUTIFUL BY LOIS LEEDS Build Up Your Figure. T may seem very much like rushing the season to write of Summer beauty problems in March, but the fact,is that many common vaca- tion’time beauty problems cannot be remedied in less than several months. Every year girls and women ask me how to correct conditions like thin thighs, fat arms, flat chests, blemished complexions, in time for a special holi- day or Summer vacation that is only a week or two away. Of course, beauty cannot be made to order at such a short notice, so I am going to help you plan ahead for the beauty you will be so anxious to have by Summertime. Let us begin with the underweight's problems. If you are one of the thin sisterhood who are ashamed to appear in a bathing suit or sleeveless frock, now is the time to begin building up graceful proportions. You realize that lack of rounded contours suggests phy- sical weakness and ill health. You may feel perfectly well, but if you are put beside a well developed athletic type of girl you look awkward and skinny, don’t you? A living skeleton isn't attractive really, even if it has blond, curly hair and soulful eyes, Underweight doesn't just happen. It 48 the result of some cause or causes which differ in different individuals. Being below the average weight for age and height is natural and pre r, how- ever, for small-boned peo they should not be classed as un erwe th Real unglerweights are people lack of weight shows them to be physi- cally below par. Bthing-pult Reuts Bec acquiring tha -sul e be- fore Summertime is to find out the causes of your underweight—with the aid of a physiclan if necessary—and then set about correcting them syste- | matically. Diet is naturally of great importance, but what is equnly s0 is the mood in which you eat. If you are tired or nervous when mealtime comes, be sure to relax and rest before 2 mouth- ful. Eat in a leisurely way and think of something pleasant. If pressed for time, don't hurry through a full-course dinner, but eat less, so that you may eat slowly. If your noon meal is taken away from home, don't make & lunch of a sandwich and ice cream, but begin with hot soup and finish with baked apple or & pudding; drink hot cocoa or milk. A quart of milk added to the daily diet will help build you up. More detailed suggestions on diet are given in my leaflet on “How to Gain Weight,” which is free to any reader who sends a request for it accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Underweights need a moderate amount | essential, especlally for chested types. Simple -stretching and bending exercises are suitable. A one calves there are deep-knee-bending | exercises, heel - raising, leg - swinging | across body and kicking. Do not exer- | cise to the point of fatigue, but do just enough to send a pleasant glow of -health and energy through your bedy. Ten minutes of easy exercise twice a day 1s usually enough in addition to the | walk outdoors. Regular exercise stimu- | lates the appetite and makes sleep more restful. Sufficient sleep is an important part of your weight-building program. A WASHINGTON DAYBOOK BY HERBERT PLUMMER.
