SPEARE. @pectal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 17.—There was & slackening of the movement in bonds As the volume of transactions contracted signs were visible of a dis- dtion either to take profits that had gg:n created since Wednesday or to withdraw temporarily from a market that was moving up so rapidly. Technical conditions, therefore, rather than any lessening of the confidence that investors feel in the banking situ- ation, had most effect in regulating prices. In two sessiohs the average of domestic corporation bonds had ad- vanced 4 points. or the greatest gain for a similar period since 1931. It was not strange, therefore, that there shoul have been some reaction today, espe: clally as the stock market was disposed to quiet down and was also required to absorb profit-taking sales. Enthusiasm for Government issues, however, cid not diminish. A number of new high prices for the week were registered. These were in the Treas- ury 4'4s and the 334s, the former ha ing now recovered about 5!z points. The 3s and 3'.s were up slightly, with transactions in the one at 98 and in the other at 99. There has been a pro- f nounced advance in the bonds of the Pederal Land Bank System this week in sympathy with the rise in Govern- ment paper and high-grade municipals and also on a revival of discussion of a possible Government guarantee of these loans. The prospect of continued agitation in Germany for a reduction in the interest rate on foreign dollar loans, to which the new head of the Reichsbank i sympathetic. disturbed the market for nearly all German issues. The gov- ernment loans were down 134 to 2% points, with losses of about the same amount in corporation bonds. At the same time French and United Kingdom issues were heavy as a result of the general war talk in Europe. The main losses in the domestic list were in the speculative rails and in- dustrials, although some of the public utilities were likewise heavy. Baltimore & Ohio 6s lost over 2 points, Southern Pacific 4';s were down 1'. points and New York Central 4';s a point. Western Union 5s, which had had a rally of nearly 13 points in 2 days. lost 2 points. American & Foreign Power 5s were off s point. On the other hand North American Co. 55 and North American Egison 5s and Philadelphia Co. 58 each gained a point. Studebaker Corporation 88 lost over 3 points. There was & de- cline of a point in Tobacco Products €125 and in Pure Oil 5'.s. gh grade issues were heavy, in- qluding Union Pacific 4s, which lost & point.
