BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 16.—In splte of the largest average advance in bonds on Wednesday in two years, there was sufficient buying power in this market again today to force up prices for many issues from 2 to 3 paints. The significant fact was that among the bonds showing greatest improve- ment were those that had had the most pronounced advances the day previous. The spectacular gains oc- eurred in the lower grades of rails, public utilities and _industrials, al- though of greater significance was the further rise in all of the United States | Treasury loans. ‘The improvement in the Government list was not so great as on Wednesday. but it exceeded what would be regard- ed as a major rise under normal con- ditions. For instance, the Treasury 4',s gained 2 points, the 3%s were up 1'; points. as were the 4s. 3,3, and 33 per cent loan averaged a gain of 34 'i“:kxng sh( “of the most active Tre; ury issues, it is found that they hav averaged an advance of over 4 points from the low level established in the first few days of March. March 16.—Resumption | of trading on the New York Cotton | Exchange today, after being closed since March 3, witnessed an advance of | 50 to 95 points. i ‘There were buying orders all around the ring at the opening. This state | of affiairs was stimulated by trans- | actions in spot cotton in Southern ma: kets during the banking holiday and the strong tone in Liverpool trading. | Hardly had the local quotations come out when wires from New Orleans indicated opening gains there ranging | from 81 to 93 poinis. This further | spurred the buying rush in the local ring. Inmal cotton quotations here were: March, 6.68, up 50; May, 6.79, up 53; \ July, 7.01, up 61; October, 7.50, up 90; December, 7.66, up 95, and Jflnuary‘ 7.65, up 85. | Opening _quotations on . the New | Orleans Exchange were: March. 6.85, up 89; May, 6.86, up 81: July, 6.99, up 83; October, 7.20, up 85, and December, 7.39, up 93. May sold up to 6.97 and October 10 7.50 during the early trading, making net advances of 70 to 94 points, as com- pared with the close of March 3. Con- siderable Southern selling as well as realizing came on the advance and there was also some selling through houses with Liverpool connections. Of- ferings were sufficient to cause some irregularity and setbacks of a few points by the end of the first half hour. Liverpool cables reported the market there firm on buying by Bombay and the continent on expectations of a sharp recovery in New York.
