MARKET REQPENS: Bond Group Proves Feature of Trading—New Issues Added. BY EDWARD C. STONE. The Washington Stock Exchange re- opened today, following yesterday's action by the board of governors. The bond divicion drew the most attention. Prices were about where they stood before the holiday was declared, which was considered both gratifying and constructive. Trading was moderate. Potomac Electric Power 6s figured in the first $1.000 transacticn, selling at 105%. Washington Rajway & Electric 48 figured in a $1.000 turnover at 87%%. Trading in the stock division was con- fmed to Potomac Electric Power pre- ferred issues. Today's session was opened under the following resoluticn, which was adopted esterday . 2 “Resolved, 'That the Washington Stock Exchange shall be opened for business at the usual hour on Thursday, March 16, trading to be in all listed bonds and stocks of public utility com- panies, and such cther securities as may be admitted for trading from time to time on order of the board of gov- y ion the governors ex- panded the list Ry adding permission to trade in Lanstdn Monotype, Peoples Drug Stores preferred and Emerson Bromo-Seltzer “A." Exchange Board Rooms Crowded. The board rooms in the local New York Stock Exchange offices were jammed to the doors again today long before the tickers started at 10 o'clock. Feverish interest was manifested in the stock market following yesterday's amazing rush of business as the Wall Street holiday came to an end. Quotations today opened higher than they closed iast night, although the ticker movement indicated that there was considerable profit taking by trad- ers who had large gains from yesterday's wild advances. This appeared to be readily absorbed as quotations made further progress. In Washington broker offices today there was an atmosphere which remind- ed one of “the good old days” before the Wall Street crash in 1929. The volume of trading was heavy, there was an endless amount of gossip about the immediate future of the market and much more confidence expressed ia the financial outlook in general. Brokers were cheerful, in fact, de- lighted with the great increase in vol- ume. Customers were cautious, as yes- terday's advance was so rapid that they feared all the gains might not beheld. : The advance in commodities also aroused unusual concern and was con- sidered extremely important in its bear- ing on the agricultural situation. Pennsy Pays Dividend. The Pennsylvania Railroad paid out $6.583.848 in dividends yesterday to 249,778 stockholders, of whom over 107, 000 are women. Many of these checks were recefved by local investors. Pay- ments to American stockholders situ- ated in the territories covered by the 12 Federal Reserve districts were: Phil- adelphia, $2,260,000; New York, $1,848,- 000; Cleveland, $868.000; Boston, $735,- 000; Chicago, $223.00 Richmond, $188,000; San Francisco, $105,000; St. Louis, $71,000: Minnecapelis, $19,000; Kansas City, $19.000; Dallas, $13,000. The Treasury is offering $100,000,- 000 of 91-day bills, for which bids will close at ‘2 p.m. Monday, March 20, ac- cerding to Secretary Woodin. This new oeffring will increase the total of bills outstanding. It may be considered as a part of the regular March 15 financ- ing. Part of the need for these funds arises from the banking situation, which will delay temporarily receipts from | taxes. Bank Presiednt Back at Desk. Victor B. Deyber, president of the! Second National Bank and secretary of the Washington Clearing House Asso- ciation, was back at his desk today after an attack of grip. Mr. Deyber had to shoulder an im- mense amount of extra work in con- nection with the almost constant meet- ings of the Clearing House Association day declared by President Roosevelt. overwork, he caught a cold which terminated in an illness which forced him to remain at home. NEW YORK, March 16.—Although volume of trading increased in today's '2;- | market, stocks were unable as a whole w | o do much more than hold yesterday's - 15 gains, = ™| During the session new highs on the ~ | movement were recorded in many in- 2, |dividual issues, but there was enough = ¥ realizing, especially in the last hour, to E: ‘: | bring prices down for an irregular close. | That the reaction was so slight was 1*| the point stressed in comment among " a| traders. For a market to hold even the *» | major part of so spectacular an advance as that of Wednesday was a notable | achievement. Volume ran well over i 3,000,000 shares today, but the bulk of | 1t was crowded into a few hours -1 -3 +1 +1 * k\ Speculative attention was diverted + 1 | from stocks to bonds and to commodi- % ties. At one 4% | time early in the session the gains ap- - % | proximated $5 a bale, but that was ;not held. In the late afternoon prices sl were up something like 50 to 60 points. ‘u There was active speculation for the T4 rise in sugar, silk, silver and rubber. <8 | The money tension eased. Call funds \| renewed at 5 per cent and dropped to | 4 per cent in the last hour. Foreign exchanges were irregular. Sterling at $3.47 was up 1% points, but all the European gold currencies were lower. | A Stock Exchange seat sold for $105,000, up $5,000 from the last previous sale. 1 | ,, Stocks that gave the best account of | themselves up until the end included % the tobacco shares and the alcchol % | issues. - ta| Trading in the first hour was at a Y2 | feverish pace.
