By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 27.—The body | of Thomas Watt Gregory of Houston, Tex.,, who was attorney general in the Wilson cabinet, was en route today to Austin, Tex., for burial. Gregory, who was 71, came here 10 days ago to confer with President-elect Roosevelt and was stricken with a cold, followed by pneumonia. His wife, son and daughter were at the bedside when he died last night. He was a prominent Democrat and lawyer. Mr. Roosevelt sent a message of sympathy to Mrs. Gregory, declaring Texas and the Nation had lost “an able and distinguished citizen.” ‘The former attorney general was born in Crawfordsville, Miss., Novem- THE EVENING STAR., WASHINGTON, LAST WORD IN FAMOUS MASSIE ASSAULT CASE ISSUED BY U. He served through the stirring war period until March, 1919, and returned to the prac- tice of law in Houston after leaving the cabinet. He often said one of his greatest sat- isfactions came through his associations with the wartime President. —_— THREE HELD IN SLAYING FRANKLIN, Ky., February 27 (). Sheriff Carlton Hunter of Yuma, Ariz., stopped over here last night while en route from New York to Yuma with three suspects in the slaying of two miners near Yuma. The prisoners, Lewis Douglass, Bill Doughty and David O'Connell, were placed in jail here. Hunter left New York by automobile Friday with the prisoners and a deputy sheriff. He stopped here tq visit his brother, Matt Hunter. D. C, MONDAY. FEBRUARY 27, 1933 Handsomely Bound Volume Contains Denial That Hawaii Has Race Problem. The Government's last word in the famous Thalia Massle assault case is just off the presses—a handsomely bound and expensively printed book, en- tifled “Hawall and Its Race Problem,” written by Willlam Atherton DuPuy, executive assistant to the Secretary of the Interior, whose department has ju- risdiction over the island territory. ‘The Government publication contains a ioreword by Secretary Wilbur, in Which he said DuPuy is an experienced investigator, a disinterested witness and that a report such as he might prepare seemed advisable, The book, in which DuPuy clairhs the social problem of race has never been raised because it does not exist, “is a digression from the usual type,” said the Interior Department announce- ment today. “Much attention has been given to the book’s artistic binding and illus- tration. It was printed by the offset process and commendable results have been secured, despite the fact that very cheap paper has been used,” the an- nouncement said. The book was turned out by the Government Printing Office. “It (the race problem) is never raised except by some outsider who brings his prejudices with him,” DuPuy wrote, *‘or some Continental newspaper which bases its interpretation of events in Hawall on race prejudices that exist where it is published. “If this islander had an appreciation of the beauty of interracial relations of these islands he would hesitate long before taking any steps that would in- terfere with them. * * * “It is a part of the beautiful experi- ment, here in the mid-Pacific, that self government is to be tried out under conditions and with human material that is new. There is nothing so far to indicate that the experiment will not turn out to be as successful as it is interesting. America obviously | should have sufficient courage to see to a conclusion her most novel venture in that type which she originated. SOLAR SYSTEM GROUP TO AID UNEMPLOYMENT Harvard College Observatory to Give Show for Cambridge Rellef Benefit. By the Assoclated Press. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February 27— Members of the solar system will be drafted by the Harvard College Observa- tory to aid in unemployment relief in Cambridge. A unique “stronomical fair” was announced last night by Dr. Harlow Shapley, director of the observa- tory, during which the observatory will be thrown open to the public. The en- tire staff will be on duty to insure instructive entertainment. ‘The “fair” is scheduled to open March 30, for three days, but if clouds should obscure the “show,” rain checks will be issued. Tickets will be sold and the en- tire proceeds turned over to unemploy- ment relief. Some of the features of the program will be continuous motion pictures of || the recent eclipse, glimpses of the con- stellations through high-powered tele- scopes, {illustrated lectures by mnoted members of the observatory staff, exhibi- tion of various and complex astronomical instruments and equipment, and many rhnwgnphl of Mars and other heaven- ly bodies.
