Wholesale trade in the fifth Federal | Reserve district presented a better pic- | ture ,in January this in some lines, than it did a year ago, the Re- | serve Bank of Richmond reports. ‘ In three wholesale lines sales were | better than last year and four sales in Japuary were greater than in Decem- | ber, the report states. Hardware showed a gain of 0.9 pcr‘ cent in January, 1933, over January. 1932; dry goods were up 4.7 per cent| over January a year ago, and wholesale | shoe sales made a gain of 34 per cent | over the corresponding month last year. | Drugs, hardware, dry goods and shoes | were the four lines that revealed an ad- vance in sales over business in De- | cember. | The Richmond bank reports that re- | tail sales in the fi rve district during the past few days have shown improvement. The Washington birth- | day holiday made a difference in the total volume of trade in all lines. Some retail stores remained open in the | fifth district and others closed for the | day, so that comparisons with the pre- | vious week are going to be rather in- | conclusive. The other 11 Federal Rese: tricts made varied reports on k i trade. The shoe business seems to have made the best showing in the past 10 days. | Firms Increase Earnings. Despite the fac U'al aggr gate earn- | ings of 633 indu: ties for the fiscal and calend of 1932 showed a drop of 73.7 per cent as compared to 1931, 49 of these com- | panies were able to improve their net | showing, according to to a compilation issued today by Mood: Investors | Service. All of these companies showed net earnings in 1932, nc companies with merely smaller deficits being in-| cluded. | The companies with increased earn- | ings were scattered throughout all| branches of industry, and only two| groups, as a whole, able to show con- | sistent improvement. These were the petroleum in which 17 companies reg- istered an aggregate gain of 18.7 per cent and the gold mining group in which the gain was 7.0 per cent. | The better showing in the petroleum group was made in the face of a drop of 7.8 per cent in dogestic gasoline consumption, and was due to better prices for petroleum and its products during much of 1932, combined with economies in operation. In the case of gold mining group, activity in gold | extraction was stimulated by lower | commodity prices. | The small size of many of the com- panies which reported gains tended to confirm the theory that smaller com- panies in many industries are bene- fitting from the absence of heavy over- head charges and large plant invest- | ment, which enables them, in many cases, to underbid their larger competi- | tors. However, their earnings are 01'\ minor importance in the aggregate, Moody's says. i Acacia Life Honors Agents. Officers of the Acacia Mutual Life | Insurance Co. gave a luncheon at the| Mayflower Hotel today in honor of the | men of the Washington and Baltimore | branches of the company. ’l'h“se’ branches led all others curing the| calendar year 1932. Officers and members of the home | office stafl present inciuded Vice Presi- | dent J. P. Yort and Samuel E. Mooers, D. F. Roberts and Dr. J. B. Nichols, medical | director; L. K. Crippen, Howard W. Kacy, counsel: O. Hammeriund, 1. M. Rodiun and E. L. Kirchner. Those from the branch honored W executive secretary; J. B. Allison, R. M Alexander, C. W. Botsch, J. E. Burbank, | W. B. Crossan, W. C. Daniel, J. I Ford W. C. Giesey, H. R. Hardisty, W. James, M. J. Kibler, .| McCausland. J. G. Priest, F. B. Rogers, P. L. Rogers, G. S. Sciwroeder, H. A. Smith, J. H. Sponsler, H. W. Stevens | and J. R. Woodward. Guests from the Baltimore branch | included Rcland C. Suter, manager; R. A. Armiger, R. L. Buffington, J. O. Colliflower. A, d'Andrea, C. E. Gray, C. Heinze, M. Heller, E. L. Hild, L. M. Luttrell, H. C. Moss, E. C. Newman, E. A. Peterson, E. H. Pickering, W. H. Purdy, W. E. Ratcliffe. J. W. Rhodes, R. C. Whitney, C. J. Willet and M. H. Woodward. | Total insurance in force at the end | of 1932 by the Washinugton branch was | $20,020,000, and Baltimore, $15,205.000. Bonds Lead Local Market. On the Washington Stock Exchange today bonds were in the best demand. The week's market ovened with four $1,000 sales and one $500 transfer in | Washington Gas Light 6s, series A, all recorded at par. Washington Railway & Electric 4s | came out on the board in $1.000 and $500 denominations at 88, while $1,000 Washington Gas Light 5s, 1960, sold at the strong price of 104. Two stocks also figured in the day's | sales. Capital Traction opened with | 10 shares selling at 9. Ten more sold at 81> and 24 more at 8, a new low on the present move. Norfolk & Washington Steamboat stock appeared on the board, a small lot changing Lands at 85. Peoples Drug Dividends Voted. | | Directors of Peoples Drug Stores, Inc., have declared the regular quarterly dividend of 25 cents a share on the common stock payable April 1 to stock of record March 8, and $1.62!2 on the preferred stock, payable March 15 to| shareholders of record March 1. Gold Dust Corpomllon has dec]ared the regular quarterly dividend of $1.50 | on the $6 preferred stock, payable | March 31 to stock of record March 17. , Joins Protective Committee. Grayson M-P. Murphy, chairman of | the Kreuger & Toll Secured Debenture- l holders Protective Committee, ~ an- nounced today he was in receipt of cable advice that Eugene Regard of Paris had accepted membership on this committes. Mr. Regard isa member of the French National Bondholders Protective Association, a semi-official body, and is chalrman of an Inter- national Committee formed to advise European holders of Kreuger securities, and which International Committee embraces in its membership representa- tives of France, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany. Col. Murphy stated that the adher- ence of Mr. Regard to the American | Committee refiected the close co-opera- | tion which had existed for sometime | with the important body of foreign holders of Kreuger & Toll Secured Debentures and constituted a further recognition of the role being played by this American committee, with ‘which approximately 60 per cent of the entire issue had already been de- posited with Guaranty Trust Co. of New York, the committee's depositary. HUGHES. ‘The decline in the stock market was resumed in the last hour of today's ses- sion. Up %o that time it had been firm and generally slightly higher. When the liquidation was resumed, however, activity picked up and numerous new lows were reported. Stocks that brok through their old 1933 resistance points included U. S. Steel common, Allled Chemical, oCn- solidated Gas, General Motors, Stand- ard Oil of New Jersey and J. I. Case. As a rule the losses were not large and would not have been considered sig- nificant if the reaction had started from a higher level, Wheat closed fractionally lower, al- though earlier in the day it had reg- istereds gains. All deliveries of corn made new lows for the season right at the end. Foreign exchanges were high- er against the dollar all day, but not importantly so. The market gave a surprisingly good 4 | account of itself all through the morn- | ing. Stocks were a shade lower at the opening, but almost immediately thereafter the market hardened, All attention was, of course, concenfrated , | on the banking outlook. The entrance of Henry Ford into the Detroit situ- ation was considered constructive and led to the hope that similap actiog | would be taken in other ceme&s whery there have been disturbances. On thy other hand, the closing of the Cleves land Stock Exchange and the restrice | tions put upgn withdrawals by banky in that city and in Indianapolis showe | | that the problem as a whole was stil] | unsolved. The market continued to look for a statement from the new administration | or in its behalf as to upholding sound money standards. If such a statement were forthcoming it wouid be the most helpful thing that could be done. For it was not only the banking troubles, .| but the movement for currency inflation which gave concern. The markets are suffering from the general lack of con- 1 | fidence, not from any deterioration in % | trade prospects, which on the contfary are brighter.
