MLELLAN DIES AT AGE OF 90 Funeral of Coast Guard Vet- eran to Be Held at Arling- ton Tomorrow. Comdr. Charles Hugh McLellan, 90, United States Coast Guard, retired, 8 veteran of three wars, died Wednesday at his home in Newburyport, Mass., it has been announced from Coast Guard headquarters here. He was the oldest living officer in the service up to the time of his death. Funeral services will be held tomor- Tow at Arlington National Cemetery, with full military rites. Commissioned officers at headquarters here will act as pallbearers. Comdr. McLellan was born in Bruns- wick, Me., in 1842, and at 21 was ap- pointed an officer in the Navy, serving in that branch until 1868. In 1874 he entered the Coast Guard, then the Rev- enue Cutter Service, as an ensign, and om then until 1904 he served in va- Tious stations on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf Coasts and Alaskan waters. During the Spanish War he was ex- ecutive officer of the Coast Guard cut- ter Manning, which was with Admiral Sampson's squadron. In 1887 he originated and successfully applied the principle of self-bailing to surfboats, which principle frees water from the boat almost immediately. He also originated the idea of using gaso- line moters in lifeboats and surfboats. Many of the present-day drills by crews of Coast Guard stations are the result of his efforts to improve the methods of rescuing mariners in distress. Comdr. McLellan was retired from the Coast Guard on September 30, 1906.
