CURB MARKET FINANCIAL SPECULATIVEBOND [ BOND FINANCIA HINES URGES PLAN ON NEW Y STOCK EXCHA R K GE PRICES UNSETTLED Amusement Group Reflects Sharp Selling—Govern- ment Issues Strong. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 27.—Unsettle- ment in a number of the speculative in- dustrial bonds and heavy liquida®ion of Canadian railway securities were fea- tures today of the investment market. The receivership announced for the Paramount-Publix Corporation caused heavy selling in the 5 per cent de- bentures around their previous low price at 8. At the same time there was a decline of 1!> points in Loew's 6s, which, however, were eble to hcld sev- eral points above their previous mini- mum figure. Warner Bros. 6s were down nearly a point, as were Keith 6s. The widest fluctuations were in Stude- baker 6s, which early dropped 315 points | and then rallied slightly. This issue was brought out last year and on its introduction to the board sold up to about 51. Today it was around 32. The sharp decline in the 7 per cent preferred stock of the company suggests some re- adjustment in the dividend next week. United States Rubber 5s lost a part of their recent advance. Oil company issues were heavy. Tobacco Products 6l4s touched a new high for the year and Western Union 55 rose a point. Dodge Erothers 6s, National Dairy Products 5%s and McCrory Stores 5125 were off from a fraction to a point. New Jersey Power & Light 4135, which were bid up to 95 a short time ago, today dropped below 90. One of the significant features of the sessicn was the strength in the first mortgage railroad bonds. Baltimore & ©Ohio 4s advanced 1'» points, Fractional gains were made by Atchison 4s, North- ern Pacific 4s and Union Pacific 4s. On the other hand, the Canadian P: cific and the Canadian National Rail road loans were heavy and gave evi- dence of a censiderable amount of liquidation. ‘This is understood to be coming from London, where insurance corporations have been _transferring funds from Canadian obligations into those payable in sterling. German issues as a group were lower, Several of the corporation and munici- pal loans were down 1 to 1l: points. Brazilian 6':s sold at the best of the year. The large oversubscription for the 5-year Treasury notes brought the pre- mium on this issue close to 1 per cent. Liberty first 4!;s, Treasury 4s and the discount Treasury notes were all strong. By the Assoclated Press. p DETROIT, January 27.—While the} automobile industry’s .sales directors in current automobile shows have been demonstrating improvements in des and mechanical advances the riding and driving public probably did not even dream about a few years ago, the car of the future and motsring as it will prevail a decade or more hence have come in for more than ordinary | consideration. All the superlatives of the sales di- rectors’ arguments seemingly are justi- fled in the 1933 models of the industi but the policy of never being completel y satisfied is spurring the automotive en- gineers on. Coincident with the local automobile show, which, although it is a dealers’ display, is regarded as one of the out- standing annual events in the industry, the Society of Automotive !:n:tnm held its annual meeting in Immediately preceding this meennl the Nation’s road builders held their an- nual convention with the American Highway. Congress here. Of greatest concern to the road builders, as outlined in resolutions adopted, was the prospect of a marked curtailment, due to economic conditions, of road-building programs in_various' States. Resolutions urged against the diversion to other purposes of taxes originally levied for highway con- struction. The automotive engineers figurative- ly laid the present-day motor car on the operating table and dissected it, to determine from what they had blue printed and assembled only & few months ago. just what further advances might be made in the subsequent models. Although the automotive en- gineers have specific ideas of what the motor car should embrace in design and mechanical characteristics, una- nimity 1s lacking and, several of them say, the motoring public is not yet ready for the drastic changes in ap- pearance that will mark the motor car of g decade hence. BY DR. MAX WINKLER. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 27.—The diffi- culties now confronting American transportation systems are not likely to be solved unless and until all carriers receive the same treatment and are put on the same basis, according to Walker D. Hines, authority on rail- roads and chief adminisirator of Amer- | ican carriers during the World War. In line with this view, Mr. Hlnea, called in 2s a special adviser Pres! dent-elect Rcosevelt on the cbl!m: pertaining to the railroads, has pro- posed remedies which he maintains can be effected much more quickly | than through the enactment: of legis- lation under ‘consideration. .Mr. Hines' plan involves the elimina- tion of the long and short haul regu- lation -established by the Interstate Commerce Commission, the curtailment of the development of waterways and Government regulation of motor bus traffic. On the assumption that Mr. Roosevelt will act favorably on these suggestions, {the future market action of railroad securities should be regarded as auspi- clous. | (Copyrisht, 1033, by North American News- Alliance.
