By the Assoclated Press. HENDERSON, Tex, January %7.— A sinister-looking but quite harmless little rod may become the best means yet developed of preventing violations of production restriction laws in the vast East Texas and other oll flelds. E. O. Buck, division petroleum en- | gineer in East Texas for the Texas | Rallroad Commission, the State agency |in charge of proration, has conducted | experiments with the device—popularly | known as & “bomb"—for obtaining bot- | tom hole pressure of wells. |, The “bomb” never explodes and, in fact, is nothing but a long cylindrical object with a chart and stylus inside. i When it is lowered in a well the ( pressure at the bottom of the hole forces the needle to mark the chart with a notation. Gauges Pressure, As a detective device, Buck says it could be used thus: The general | pressure areas of various sections of the great field are known. Pressure will decline but very slowly so long as pro- duction is restrained in accordance with | proration regulations. When the press- fure in a well is found to have fallen | sharply in & given period it means that well, or its neighbor: has been | “gunned"—that is, flowed at a faster rate than the orders permit. | “If we took the bottom hole pressure | in key wells in the field every 60 days,” | Buck explained, “we could catch prorae | tion violators dead to rights. _“We have back records of pressure in the fields showing unquestionably that the decline in a given area pro- | ceeds at about the same rate, provided |all are produced in accordance with | the commission’s regulations. “Possibly 10 men to operate the bote | tom hole pressure apparatus would be | enough to handle the work.” One matter, however, which could not | be determined, he added, would be the | actual amount of overproduction. Evasion Possible. Under present methods of keeping tab on production, numerous Railroad | Commission _agents are compelled to check pipe line, tanks, terminal facili- ties, and the like, constantly. Often | methods of evading the check are de- vised, a popular one being “by-passes,” or hidden pipes to carry off excess pro- duction into other than regular chan- | nels. | Jse of the “bomb,” Buck sald, would leave no possible way of concealing the fact that a well was being operated - in violation of the commission's orders. The “bombs” are calibrated before |and after they are lowered into the | wells. Last December, during the shut- down in the fleld, they were used to divide the region into pressure areas. “‘Bomb’ is an unfortunate nickname for the device,” Buck said. “It prob- ably got the name through its resem- | blance to nitroglycerine bombs some- | times used to ‘shoot’ wells and bring them in.” = 'NIECE TO CONTEST WILL OF FORMER PROSPECTOR Cincinnati Woman Seeks to Share Estate of Recluse Cattleman Who Made Fortune.
