MANILA, P. I. (#).—To the 7,083 islands previously credited to the Phil- | ippines, eight more were officially added | when Secretary of State Stimson and Sir Roneld Lindnsay exchanged ratifi- cations of a new treaty at Washington. They lie off the coast of Borneo and | have been, with others neaiby, a source | of dispute since a centurv before the United States took the Philippines from Spain in 1898. Commercially they amount to little, having only a few hundred permanent { residents, but the new treaty facilitates the administration of customs and im- | migration laws. | nese have entered the Philippines il: legally in recent years from North!' | Borneo through this maze of islets, and | where American sovereignty began and British ended for decades has not been | clear. The group is generally referred to as the Turtle Islands because they swarm with turtles. Nearby are fertile fishing | grounds where Moro, Borneo Malay, Chinese and Japanere fishermen op- erate. | From the beginning of the nlncuenf.hl century the islands were recognized as| belonging to Spain and they were the | subject of a series of treaties with the | Moros_and with the British North| Moro Co. the Spanish-American War After when Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, it was discovered the boundary line did not include the islands mentioned in the latest treaty. There were more negotiations, but the ! boundary remained hazy until Gov.| Gen. Leonard Wood proposed the line that has been adopted. Since 1907 the actual administration | of the group has been under the British North Borneo Co.. and under the new | treaty this arrangement is continued | { though American sovereignty is recog- nized. There still remains some question in connection with the ownership of a number of islets in this isolated section | of the world, for Princes Dayang Dlynng‘ of the Sulu Moros has filed a claim| with the State Department to owner-| ship of 16 of the spots of land, on (h“‘ ground that no treaty takes them into account and that they were given to‘ her by her aged grandmother, former | ruler of the Mohammedan Filipinos of | the Island of Sulu. This claim is taken lightly by legll\ advisers of the governor general, how- ever. |GOFF ESTATE IS VALUED AT MORE THAN $100,000 Widow of Former West Virginia Senator Asks for Papers as Executrix. HOLLYWOOD, Calif., January 25 (N.AN.A.) —All good movie people carry a sufficient sum of money these days to insure their escaping a good beating should they be held up. The boys with the guns have a way of using fists when they don’t find cash on the person. And jewelry isn't considered very much in 1933. The latest Hollywood racket is one in which famous stars are telephoned and the suggestion made they can re- ceive protection for the sum of $500 the week. If they refuse they are politely told that such and such things can hap- pen, that $500 is nothing compared to | what they might have to surrender “if certain things occurred which might oc- cur if there is no protection insured,” and so on. All of which explains the | bars on lower story windows of the vil- lage famous; the strong-arm men which are ever present—at least 20 of our most track for some of Garbo's pictures and has appeared in foreign versions. Peggy Hopkins Joyce arrived in Honylood and was met by bodyguards at the station—she had received an anonymous warning about her dia- monds, it seems, before leaving New York, and she feared for her safety. No story there. Nearly every star In Hollywood has a bodyguard, dia- monds galore, several husbands, blonde hair and an international name for beauty and sex appeal. It makes it difficult for ladies to outdo one another when all ladies do so well. Peggy Hopkins Joyce's tallor suit would have caused a world of comment g:dk it nmjbe:nt for the fact that its rk gray jacket sported a paler gra) skirt ~ Whereas, Marlene Dietrich’s dark gray jacket tallor suit sports a paler gray pair of trousers—and that’s noted gelatin stars never appear in pub- fnews, even in this day. Peggy wore a lc without a bodyguard—and - other safety measures. ‘Taxes have reached such an altitude on earned income that one famous di- | rector in Hollywood whose yearly sti- pend from his work is $100,000, estimat- ed recently that when all.the taxes and | | insurance he had to pay were cleared up he would have exactly $12,000 a year ! on which to live. . . 'n Ronzld | Colman leaves the United Artists Studio he cen't work in Hollywood for two | yellow turtle-necked sweater, but every one out here, from Clark Gable to Miriam Hopkins, wears turtle necks and likes them. Peggy pinned an orchid on the inter- viewer, just to show that it wasn't glven her for romantic reasons, but sent from a Chicago admirer just be- | cause Peggy Hopkins Joyce is Peggy Hopkins Joyce. (Copyright, 1 years. According’ to his contract he | — could have stayed on with Sam Gold- | wyn for two more years—so the situa- | tion is reversible; since he does not wish to stay on for two more years with Goldwyn, he cannot make pictures for any cne else for that period. The British studios and the stage are still | open to him, But his plan includes four | months on a yacht, with the Blue| Aegean as a goal. | Story difficulties seem to be rife at | this time. Perhaps the story equinox of Hollywood is on the way. “Pig- boats” must be completely rewritten, one hears, so the cast is laid off while the rewrite goes on. Jimmie Dunn's next flicker, written for him by two girls in the reading department of the Fox lot, is called “Sailor’s Luck” and [* was chosen because it was felt he would lock well in a sailor’s suit. e Government of this United | States tells Ursula ns that her stay | in the land of the tars and Stripes | is up, so she %nust go home for the | “Cdvalcade” is finished. | Federal investigation of foreign stars is very strict and the law is being strict- |1y adhered to . . .
