Smoak has just completed his examinations, which, officials said, are comparable to third year college, with a very high average, conducted by the Marine Examining Board here. Corpl. Smoak was born in Jackson, Miss., on July 12, 1911, and came into | the Marine Corps on August 10, 1929. He has served at Quantico, Va.; in Cuba and in Haiti, and became a corporal in August, 1931. It is necessary, officials | explained, for a candidate to be a non- commissioned officer to take the enlisted men’s examination for a commission. The corporal’s brother, Second Lieut. Joe A.
