F AMUSEMENT BOND ISSUES SELL OFF Other Industrials Irregular. Railroad Group Shows Some Gains. IN BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK. January 25.—The wslk‘ spot in today’s bond market was in | the group of amusement company secur- fties. Nearly all of these were under pressure and sold not only at new low prices for the year, but at the lowest average in their history. The receiver- ship for the Radio-Keith-Orpheum system was the factor influencing further liquidation in this part of the list. Declines of a point occurred in Para- mount-Publix 5':s and Keith 6s. The heaviest loss was that of 41> points in Loew’s 6s, which broke to 68 compared ‘with the high of the year of 84. Pathe s fell below 55. Other industrials were irregular, with some good gains among them. U. S. Rubber 5s rose over 3 points, which mere than recovered Tuesday's loss. Schulco gained 2 points, International Paper 6s declined nearly a point and ‘were about the same amount above the year's low. Youngstown Sheet & Tube 5s were heavy, United Drug 5s rose a point and Tobacco Products 6's ap- proximated their high of the yeer. In the rail list the changes were| slight, but mainly favorable. It is un- derstood that the February interest pay- ments that have been causing some un- rest among rail bond holders will be promptly met. There is at the moment | a better sentiment toward the outlook | for railroad earnings, which modlfleil the effect of evidence that several car- | riers are close to the point where they must either receive further aid from the ! Reconstruction Finance Corporation or default. The foreign department of the mar- vas quieter than it has been re- with Germans lagging and the lead taken by Italian loans, which were at the h\ghe‘t since 1931. Italian gov- ernment 7s moved up to 101 and the City of Rome 6'=s were quoted at about ! 92." Argentine dollar issues recovered | where there had been losses the dfi)’, previous. United States Treasury issues main- | tained a strong position without being | 80 buoyant as earlmr in the week. WHOLESALE COMMODITY PRICE INDEX DECLINES By the Associated Press. The wholesale commodity price index of the National Fertilizer Association registered a full point drop during the week ended January 21, to 569. It is based on representing 1926-28 prices | for 476 individual items as 100. Ten of the 14 main groups comprising the index dropped during the week, with 2 advancing. Declines were in the | groups of fats and oils, fuel, foods, mixed fertilizer, fertilizer materials, textiles, metals, agricultural implements,” house furnishing goods and miscellane- | ous commodities. The drops were very sharp in the fuel, foods and fats and oils group, while automobiles and build- | ing materials were fractionally higher. Listed among the declining commodi- | eggs, milk, bread, sugar, flour, | all grains, heavy melting | c, tin petroleum, gasoline, rub- Iphate of ammonia, su- cotton, colton yarns and | the commodities that | luced burlap, tallow, feed- cement and coffee. i — Steel Inguiries on Increase. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 25.—Breaking | out of the narrow range that marked | initial dealings, the Curb Exchange ' turned active and higher today. The two principal stock groups, pub- lic utilities and petroleums, however, provided a relatively small percentage of the rise that started at the beginning of the second hour. Electric Bond & Share was up fractionally, but Cities Service was lower and Standard Oil of Indiana was unchanged. Electrical output M week was lower than in the preceding seven days, while both gasoline inventories and crude oil production in the same period increased over the previous week. These unfavor- able trade trends only moderately af- fected these two stock lists. Specific corporate developments, however, were recorded on the tape. Thus the start of hearings on the Niagara-Hudson power group Thursday by the Federal Trade Commission for a time caused those shares to be offered. Tampa Electric, as forecast recently by the stock, declared its regular common quarterly dividend. BONDS ON THE CURB Salesin DOMESTIC BONDS, Jigh. Low. Noon. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 25—The for- eign exchange market today presented & | curious jigsaw puzzle of cross currents, as most of the world's leading gold cur- rencies showed a measure of weakness, while “managed” or non-gold curren- cles suddenly blossomed forth with a hidden show of strength. The dollar sagged in terms of the British pounds sterling and currencies linked with sterling. such as the Nor- wegian monies, and even the Spanish leading banking circles like that o! . cat chasing a mouse, when mouse turns and puts the cat to rmn The explanation offered in high Wall Street banking quarters was that a strong international speculative ring, which every now and then has been making a stab at some currency, de- cided that the time was propitious, with s0 much free discussion now goin; the rounds about inflation, to start sell ing the gold currencies. The daring of the enterzrise, it was said in these same leading banking auarters, was exceeded only by the unorthodox method of spec- ulation. Ordinarily, speculation is con- fined to selling the weaker currencies, not the stronger. Bankers appeared to derive some en- tertainment from the maneuver, al- though they decried the spreading of inflation rumors, saying they have the effect of chilling business enterprise. Buyers and sellers, they explained, are hesitant about signing long-term con- tracts if doubt is entertained as to the validity of the currency. They expressed their belief, however, ithat the present movement would not continue long, because responsible bank- ing heads in Europe realize that, the two major political parties in the United States are both pledged, in their pre- election platforms, to sound-money policies. 'EXPANSION IN STEEL Current Week's Production Is Esti- mated at 17 Per Cent by Trade Journal. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 25 —Steel mak- ing operaticns continue to expznd slow- ly, this week's production of ingots be- ing estimated at 17 per cent of the country’s capacity, Iron Age said to- day. A gain of 'about 1 percentage oint has occurred each week since the ginning of the new year. “The most striking changes have oc- curred at Chicago and Cleveland. In the | Chicago district, Where output had re- | | mained at about 9 per cent of capacity |since the week before Christmas, the | because of a more diversified demand, |as well as considerable support from ithe automobile industry, while at Cleve- land stcel-making has increased from ‘41 to 44 per cent on an influx of or: | ders for bars from the motor car mak- |ers ! gained moderately, but operations in | the valleys are lower than last week, owing to the idleness of one of the | plants in that district. Ty Comprehensive officials’ advices said that in the West Central Great Plains the condition of wheat was very poor to only fair, with considerable damage from soil blowing. Emphasis was also given to reports of Winter killing of wheat in the Pacific Northwest and to severe low temperatures in parts continental Europe devoid of snow cav- ering. Price bulges, however, failed to kold well, and at times the market dipped under yesterday's finish.
